No, you don't just build them and wait for them to fail. You maintain them like any other infrastructure. Which is why so many of them are so old.
The protests are fine, whether trump can bully them through remains to be seen.

Regardless of your position on President Trump, watch the video here:

VP Pence is so awkward... and President Trump is so... awkward.

FWIW, the problem then is not that Trump is trying to ram the pipelines through - short term solutions remain valid even if they don't solve long term issues. The problem is that the long term planning is not coinciding with the short term solution.

Has there been any action for or against a "long term solution" in the past couple days by Trump or his team?

I can say that even the many Trump voters in these parts are already getting turned off by him. They were happy to say "well sure he lied but those are things that have to be done to get elected sometimes" but they aren't happy to say "sure he's lying about the crowd numbers and this and that but that's OK". They are in fact getting frustrated with the BS because all it does is put emphasis on him being exactly like every other politician in Washington...and in fact worse.

President Trump stands by his belief that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 presidential election, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday.
The spokesman doubled down on the false claim after the president raised it Monday night during a reception with congressional leaders.
"The president does believe that. He has stated that before," Spicer told reporters at the daily press briefing on Tuesday afternoon.

The Badlands National Park's twitter account is today's government affiliated Twitter account passively aggressively trolling Trump:

It's hilarious that it's a different account every day.

You sound like Jane Fonda, and very naive. People get paid to have energy infrastructure on their land, and that includes first nations. If you don't want to sell or lease the land they go around it.

I live in Missouri, work in Oklahoma and play hockey in arkansas....most voted for Trump. Many are still blissfully happy the black communist isn't in office anymore (and yes that is something I have heard more than once), some were immediately "good lord what have we done" on election night and a good chunk of the remaining are quickly going to "hmm this is actually embarrassing and not what I thought would happen. He isn't capable of being a president".
Why the third group couldn't see it before election day I don't know but they are starting to see it now.
