Unless David Poile is available or something, you gotta re-sign Treliving.

It has to happen now to make sense.

There are other items that Flames ownership would look at it and it would include things such as
1) Why extend, pretend and then fire Hartley? That is costing ownership cash this year
2) What have Treleving's draft picks done vs the contribution that Feaster have done?
3) Why another identical slow start to last year? We are chasing Edmonton and that is a team we have lost 3 games to. If we don't make playoffs, bad goaltending and poor coaching decisions combined with a slow start will be a factor.
4) The trading of Sven & Granlund, Bollig to the minors, Mason Raymond buyout's and other moves will all be considered when it comes time for a contract extension.
For full disclosure I do think he has earned himself another contract with the Flames. He has done great work here but there are some glaring mistakes too. The most surprising mistakes are ones I would have thought Brian Burke would have stepped in to help protect.
I have said it before and I will say it again, Treleving has got the bigger things right when it comes to the team but filling in some of the blank's with the smaller pieces haven't gone nearly as well. We will see what happens but at the end of the day President and GM will be judged by the results to ensure they are earning their muli-million dollar contracts.

David Poile may get fired if Predators miss the post season
Doug Armstrong same case
Dean Lombardi is an interesting one if Kings miss.
Don Maloney who is already inside the organization could potentially replace him or Burke if Burke decides to move onto Hockey USA.

How can anyone possibly think Treliving doesn't deserve a contract. Not EVERY move he makes is going to be perfect. Christ

Bollig to the minors and the Raymond buyout were good things... the bad was that he signed them in the first place.

Just looked up Colborne's stats. Wow. BT should be extended solely on letting Colborne walk.
4 pts in 32 games, and hasn't had a POINT since Oct 20 (game 4). No points in 28 games!!
29 SOG total in 32 games.
Unreal.

Didn't Sutter spend most of his tenure as GM without a contract as well and worked on a 'year-to-year handshake' kind of deal?

Yeah it's very, very hard and frankly just not true for one to convince that he's made this team less skilled during his tenure or even to go further and say that as a when, he's come out losing more trades than not.
His body of work, on paper, has been very good. Acquiring guys like Frolik and Hamilton alone outweigh any perceived loss in skill.

I don't even know why this is an issue- There will always be mistakes. I'm old enough to remember Fletcher getting flak (i.e. Steve Simmons) in the Flames' early days in Calgary.
It's not like Treliving traded Gilmour or offer-sheeted an RFA who could've been lost on waivers.

Hamilton was a great move. Frolik was a good move but it's not like Treliving stole him as the guy is getting $4.3 million annually. Besides that move is pretty well cancelled by giving the same contract to a 31 year old Brouwer.

The guy seems bright as hell. He works hard (or so he tells us) and not likely to make an impulsive mistake. Thus far seems like an extremely average GM, with no home run moves and mistakes seem relatively minor. Time will tell if he hired the right coach but the guy atleast deserves another year or two. Average is OK for first 2 years on the job.
Could care less if Burke stays. No idea what he does.
Is the team overall better positioned than 2 years ago? Other than acquiring Hamilton and having Tkachuk fall into our lap, I'd say about the same.

If Brouwer becomes a bad contract at some point, then it becomes a valid point. At this point, that is not the case.

He hasn't been much of a factor this season and I don't see him getting markedly better with age. I would be pretty happy if we could get two 20 goal seasons out of the contract but I'm not sure that's how you want to spend $16 million. It's not the worst contract ever but IMO it was unnecessary as he doesn't have a high skill upside and doesn't really fill the holes the team needed which was skill on the wings. He's not a replacement for what they were getting out of Hudler a few seasons ago and that's what the Flames are missing today. Don't get me started on Chiasson who inexplicably has become a fixture in the top 6.

He would have more points if the Flames were producing more, 5 on 5. That is true for all of them.
His value is not limited to points though, and will be more on display when games are more meaningful.
I think sometimes fans just don't like contracts for older players and want to complain about them long before the player even starts to decline. Giordano is a perfect example - everybody's favorite until the moment he signs a new contract and then he's instantly too old and every bad play becomes confirmation that his skills are deteriorating.

1. Extending Hartley was done on the basis of his one great year, Firing him was on the basis of a very subpar year. I'm pretty sure he had ownership's blessing.
2. Comparing draft picks from one year to the next is futile. The choices are different, the drafting spots are different. Anyway, the key scouting staff is still there.
3. This start is miles ahead of last year, even with the terrible first couple weeks. Have a look at the snake topic. This year much more resembles the playoff year in terms of wins and losses at this point. Two of the losses to Edmonton came in the first week when things were bad. They could easily have won the last one.
4. Well obviously everything will be "considered" by owners when dealing with an extension. But Sven demanded a trade and got a good return, Granlund was squeezed out and got a good return, Bollig earned his demotion, Mason Raymond earned a buyout. Yeah, he signed those two but name a gm who doesn't have a few bad contracts (you can add Bouma, I guess).
