Clean hit, but the league may suspend him due to it being predatory. Yes, people need to keep their head up, but the league clearly wants to eliminate hits where guys take advantage of a player that is vulnerable.
Looked to me like their helmets may have hit. Clearly the first and primary contact was the chest, but Laine's head may have then hit McCabe's. Then it also looked like the back of Laine's head may have hit the ice.
Either one of those things may have concussed him.

Sorry missed this when I posted above.
Exactly correct.
Anybody who says otherwise didn't watch then or is pretending otherwise.
And why can't you have both? A huge, clean open ice hit, and someone jumping in to stand up for a teammate.
Silly to think otherwise, really.

Was that a big hit?! Maybe I had a few too many before seeing the highlights but that seemed like a pretty common type of hit.

Agree. Just a solid hit. Nothing extraordinary. Simply a solid guy who is planted vs a moving slighter guy and physics takes over.

I hate to break it to you but the NFL has already put rules in place banning predatory hits. And the uproar from football fans has far exceeded hockey fans complaining about it becoming a finesse game.

It's also not ok for people on the street to:
-Shoot pucks at strangers at upwards of 90 MPH
-Body check someone "cleanly"
-Dozens of other things you'll see in an NHL game

Back in the day, line brawls would start up just because two guys chirped each other and then started a fight. This was when the whole line from one team fought a line from anotber, not just the 5 guys on the ice. Now a days some guy retaliates and only a few guys are in a scrum and sissy fans are like "Oh the humanity! Won't someone think of the children?!?"

Ha exactly. Bench clearing brawls happened regularly, on a whim. And now some people try to suggest that fighting a guy after a bit hit confirms the wussification of the game? Please...
We can try to eliminate predatory head shots and still enjoy a hard nose game.

I watched this hit repeatedly making sure what I saw, due soley to your comment. I cannot agree with your assessment at all. I see McCabe coming across the ice to pressure the puck (Shuffles), sees the puck come across to Laine and slams on the brakes and stuffs Laine into himself.
Opportunistic? As all hell. You betchya.
Predatory? Not even remotely.

I suppose the reaction was to be expected in this day and age, but honestly I didn't even think it was a particularly hard hit, let alone one to be talked about at length. Too bad that Laine was shaken up but really was a "meh" play.

Stevens and Regehr are completely different. Stevens was predatory and hit to injure. Regehr was great and using angles and the boards to lay hits but it was never predatory or designed to injure. It was all about separating player from puck. In my mind Regehr is the model of what physical play in the NHL should be all about while Stevens represents what it shouldn't be

Too much complaining in here about Scheiffle fighting McCabe after the hit. Just like other posters have mentioned, if Gaudreau took a hit that big (clean or dirty), I think everyone in here would be all for Engelland, Hathaway, or Ferland beating the living hell out of the perpetrator.
The hit was awesome, and the Jets sticking up for their star afterward was even better. I wish we saw more of this on our team so players like Kessler wouldn't have their way with Johnny.

wow.... dont even know what to say, the guy gets a text book stand up hit, and gets literally a whole line on his back... sorry your rookie didnt learn the mistakes of Eric lindros 15 years ago and has his head down going up the ice.
If that deserves a line brawl then fata me right here and now... please tell me there were instigator penalties, that disgusts me....

Watch the video again; I see only Scheiffle on McCabe and that's it. All of the other Jets had their own opponents. Looks like a damn good team sticking up for one of their own.

do you not see the dog pile that develops on top of him after? Sure everyone on buffalo ties up a winnipeg guy, but it still all happens on top of him, implying that either he has a gravitational force, or they were all going for him.
Also can we stop and address that the whole issue based on this hit can be traced back to the garbage suicide pass that Scheiffle gave him

How in this a "predatory" hit? In either football league, there would be no dust up after the play. The protection of star players, by running someone that makes a clean hit, is a detriment to the game of hockey.
