Do you have any examples of any other Catholic bishops in Canada that often pen anti-homosexual op-ed pieces in large-distribution newspapers?
Not off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure a Google search of the archives will turn up op-ed pieces by a broad variety of Bishops who have penned pieces that espouse views which run contrary to more popular liberal perspectives on such controversial topics. Regardless, just look at the guiding documents that bishops often release or even public records (news, statements etc) and you'll see consistency across the board with all Canadian bishops. Bishop Henry just happened to be a little more blunt about it and perhaps more outspoken. Still, why is that such a bad thing? Canada is a democracy and prides itself in having a marketplace of ideas. Penning an op-ed piece is exactly what we should expect as a reasonable means of debate--even if sometimes the perspective espoused might be abhorrent to others. Some will agree, many will disagree and hate him for it. But that's all apart of the discussion.

Right, but then I'm not sure why you are protesting the idea that he should be reviled for having revolting opinions, and reinforcing bigotry and hatred publicly.
Most practising Muslims are more conservative than even conservative Catholics. Increasing numbers of Muslims are enrolling in Catholic schools because of their policies on morality and sex education. And while the violence comment was out of line, I find it extremely unlikely that the kinds of people who are jeering at Henry would make the same derisive comments about an imam or the faith of Alberta Muslims.
They absolutely would if said imam were as publicly outspoken as Henry is.
You don't need to have a Catholic parent to enrol in Catholic high school.
I must be missing that part from this link?
Quote:
Grades 1 – 12
A child who turns five years old on or before March 1 is eligible to register for Grade 1 in that fall of that same calendar year. For example, this means to register for Grade 1 in September 2017, children must turn five years old on or before March 1, 2017. The child’s birth certificate is required and one parent’s Catholic baptismal certificate is requested to be presented at the time of registration. Resident Catholic students transitioning from kindergarten to Grade 1 in the same school do not need to re-register for Grade 1. Non-resident students need to inquire with the principal of the school to determine if they will be able to register for Grade 1 based on available room and resources. Parents/legal guardians of students not previously registered at any grade level should call the school for an appointment to register.
Right, but then I'm not sure why you are protesting the idea that he should be reviled for having revolting opinions, and reinforcing bigotry and hatred publicly.
Not protesting. People can and should have their opinions. I was just simply elaborating on the observation that people are needlessly and somewhat laughably surprised at a Catholic bishop espousing catholic views.
As for what some may see as revolting opinions... fair enough. I'd argue that the bigotry label is unfair though. The church has a remarkable history and tradition of philosophical thought and scientific inquiry. The bishops stances are consistent with catholic perspectives of sexuality, sanctity of life etc. The bigotry label is used to just simply attempt to shut down debate and discredit opposing arguments while ignoring the philosophical and intellectual perspectives that underlie them.

LOL, what? We are still talking about the Catholic church here?

No, it's calling a spade a spade. The size of the machinations that drive his views shouldn't justify his position.

Are you really that surprised though? Honest question. Because this comment speaks of someone who knows very little history of the church and it's traditions. I'd encourage you to do a quick and honest Google church and you'd be surprised at what you find. For example, it was a Catholic Priest, Georges Lemaitre at the Catholic University of Leuven, that first proposed the Big Bang Theory. The Catholic church had a significant role, arguable prominent role, in the establishment and operation of universities. The Jesuits are well known for their history of scientific discoveries. Many aspects of western society were greatly influence by Christian thought. Today, the Vatican even holds some kind of conference and gathering of world renowned scientists--forget what it's called. These are just off the top of my head.
Having gone to Catholic school my entire life, I don't agree with probably the majority of their teachings. The ''be nice to each other'' bit is all good. But the church is outdated, robotic, and easily the most corrupt entity in the history of humanity. But calling Bishop Henry a POS is pretty low IMO. I certainly didn't agree with much of what he said. Especially the HPV vaccine fiasco and the LGBT stance he took. But that's what's mandated by the church. If he doesn't speak out against it, the church replaces him with someone who does. Hate the church and their teachings, but not the man himself.
Need to be baptized (or a parent has to have been) as far as I know.
They "request" (not "require") the baptismal certificate, but I believe you can still register without one if there is space in the school. Catholic students get priority though.

Lol, and the Jesuits had to do so in secrecy, in fear of being prosecuted by the church. Alchemists, burn them!!

So it's okay for a Catholic bishop to hold traditional Catholic beliefs so long as he keeps his mouth shut? It's worth pointing out that the media turned to Henry again and again for comment whenever these social issues came up. Pretty sure they aren't calling up local imams for comment whenever sex education or LGBTQ bathrooms come up.
It's sad how few Canadians today really believe in pluralism.

Fred Henry wasn't giving off the cuff remarks to reporters over the phone. He wrote long opinion pieces published in the Herald outlining his positions. The whole but Muslims defense for some pretty retrograde ideas he pushed are ridiculous. The former Bishop also had a far greater reach, considering a large segment of the population claims to be Catholic, than the varied tapestry of Muslim clerics and schools of thought practiced here. The Catholic Church is fairly consistent compared to the various sects of Islam when it comes to practices and beliefs.
