Great to see the good guys win a game that they should win! It must be kind of hard on a team when they go up 4-0 very early in a game, hard to keep pushing the pace etc when you know really early on that you're likely going to win.

Positives: Bouma was awesome tonight, that's the best I have seen him skate all season. Backlund continues to be our best player.

Negatives: What to say about Sean Monahan. The guy is having a really disappointing season. Today he was fighting the puck a lot, was running into other players, plays were dying on his stick, it was hard to watch. 10 goals and 10 assists half way into the season is not enough for a guy making the money he makes. 6 games in a row without a point and hasn't been a plus player in ten games. We know he is capable of more, we've all seen it. I really hope the second half of the season is better for Sean.

That all said, I'd be stunned if he doesn't make it to 50. With or without Gaudreau. He is our best Center, but he might only be our 2nd or 3rd best so far this year, and we are still ok.... think of what can be

Refs got whistle happy and our hot PK stopped AZ's bottom-third PP. All four of our goals were a bit grimy, even the two second-unit PP ones, and Domingue let in everything, while Elliott was solid.

Check the first period stats.
Domigue SV%: .556
5on5 scoring chances: 6-1
5on5 Fenwick: 11-4

It's even uglier after the second.

Great that we picked up a win, especially since Gaudreau was blanked again but we haven't beat a good team since the Anaheim 8-3 game, almost a month ago.

You may not even realize this was George Michael until the credits were given to you. A modern day crooner in the body of a pop-star. You shall be missed.
George Michael was the s***. Rocking a kings hat in this video.

We were actually outplayed pretty badly in the first, except for about a 3-4 minute stretch. Fortunately for us, Domingue spent much of his time swimming beside the net instead of in front of it. The difference in those goals was puck luck. But that was a quality third period to prevent the Coyotes from getting back in at all. Overall, a quality win.

Also, what set Anthony DeAngelo at the end of the second? Pretty stupid time to pick up what will probably be a three game suspension for abuse of an official there as he shoved the linesman trying to get at someone else.

Wideman exceeded recent expectations and the goal was nice.

I would have gone with Frolik, Backlund, Bouma

Believe he was suspended twice in junior for incidents with refs (although verbal in those cases), has trouble controlling himself.

The Flames franchise has an overall 18-9-3 record on New Year's Eve (the 3 are all ties, not OT losses). That includes a 4-0 record in Atlanta.

Oddly, the Flames didn't play on NYE for their first five seasons in Calgary. They played their first NYE home game in 1987.

They didn't play in 1989, but it has been essentially an annual tradition ever since 1990. The only years where the Flames haven't played at home on NYE since 1990 were the three lockout years (1994, 2004, 2012); 2011 because of the World Jrs; and 1999 because the NHL was worried about Y2K and played a limited schedule that night.

The Flames record at home on NYE is 14-7-3.

Their most-frequent opponent on NYE has been Montreal, who they've played 8 times (4-3-1), although not since 2002.

The Oilers are the second most-frequent NYE opponent. The Flames have played the Oilers 6 times on NYE, and have never lost (5-0-1).

I believe DeAngelo's junior suspensions were for racist slurs. That's why some teams shied away from drafting him.

A rare visit to the Dome last night for me, since I don't live in Calgary. Allowed me to see a couple of things differently.

Wideman was just fine. One of his better games.

Surprised at how utterly invisible Monahan was. That is concerning.

Backlund and Frolik were best players on the ice.

Went to the game as well and agree with your thoughts on Monahan. Absolutely disinterested in every play it looked like.

Heard that fool John Shannon named Brodie as a star as well. WTF? We were surprised not to hear more love for Chiasson. He was impactful every shift and drew a couple of penalties. I thought he played great.

I'm more frustrated than concerned because Monahan is clearly having an "off" year. He is under contract for six more and is obviously a much better player than he is playing right now. I'm confident he will get back to what makes him effective in plenty of time to help the Flames, even if it doesn't happen this season.
