We were out at confederation park by the light displays. Didn't see any helmets, but I might invest in shin guards with all of those plastic sleds coming down pretty fast and making it all the way to the walking path.

All I can say is its clearly a miracle I'm alive, having spent my childhood being told to eff off out on my bike all day on Saturday by my mum who didn't want me underfoot with no helmet or cell phone or training about pedophiles at all, on top off that every adult got to beat any child for any reason.
How we survived is beyond me

Even with helmets kids can still get sprains and broken limbs. If your obligation as a parent is to keep your kid safe, then the safest course of action is to not let them toboggan at all.

Oh, thanks for the update. What an epiphany. Guess we better stop doing absolutely everything on Earth. Could get a tummy ache from drinking water. We might as well all roll over and die. Probably a lot easier than going around inventing helmets so that we can still enjoy fun things, but at less risk.

Hey, sorry for starting this thread and then not checking it for a few days, but I appreciate all the comments on both sides. I really wasn't sure what the correct answer is, but there are a lot of variables.
I think we are going to buy a skiing helmet for the kid to use for tobogganing. I don't think it was entirely necessary on this particular day on this particular hill, but on a more crowded or different hill it would be a good option.
The people who commented about our social media post worried about helmets - their opinion was coming from a good place, and they weren't trying to be jerks or showing off their parenting skills. It's not commonplace these days to be given a contrary opinion, but I try to understand what the person is saying before unleashing the "HOW DARE YOU TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH MY CHILD" bomb.
Coincidentally, on this same tobogganing evening last week, I took a minor side spill to avoid hitting a soccer goalpost and my left hand and wrist have been hurting ever since. I don't think anything is broken, but it's probably a sprain. So maybe I should be more safe!

So how did we all survive without all the helmets and safety of today? Well, a few of us didn't:
I don't understand why we would stop trying to get the lines down on the chart. Sometimes safety becomes over the top, but is wearing a helmet during sports activities a negative experience in any tangible way that offsets the prevention of injury it provides?
EDIT: Pretty easy to pick off the guys in this thread that use the lame cage trash talk in division 8 beer league hockey games.

Selecting a safe path for tobogganing likely improves your safety more than the wearing of a helmet would. However I'm not one to judge as there is a face eating storm grate in the middle of mine.

That goalpost was completely out of the way - something (my big ass) caused my sled to veer left to the point it became an issue. But yeah, definitely important to have a safe route.
