I delivered for Pizza Hut between 2003 and 2006. I'm sure things have changed a bit since then, but I made $2.85 a delivery when I started and by the time I left it was $3.15, and tips. A good night would be 22-25 deliveries. On average, I'd walk out of there with $100-$125. Not bad for a high school kid who was working 3/4 shifts a week.

Once in a while you'd have a bad shift where you'd do 8-10 deliveries. You walk out with $40-$50 in 3 hours.

There was the occasional insane night where I'd do 30-32 deliveries and walk out with over $200. I used about a half tank of gas on a busy shift and drove an old beater - my maintenance costs were basically just more frequent oil changes.

On average I would say I made about $16-17 an hour after you subtract gas.

I also worked at a mid-level chain restaurant (think BP's, Milestone's, etc.,) as a server in 2013 and 2014.

My hourly wage was $10.20 per hour. I worked about 280 hours in 2013 from Sept. to Dec. and made $2,956.02 and $7,775.00 in tips. That works out to $38.33 per hour. I worked quite a lot in December/over Christmas break and this particular restaurant was located in a mall.

In 2014 I worked about 280 hours as well from Jan. to Apr., and made $2,967.77 and $5,388 in tips. That works out to $29.84 per hour.
Thanks for this!

Really goes against what a lot of posters have been saying. I'm supposed to break the bank for ####ty service and they're already making damn good money for what is talked about like a minimum wage job. Plenty of people with degrees make a fair bit less than servers. No more tips! No more tips!

Break the bank? It's tip money.

If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to be at the restaurant you're at.

So you think it's wise to go to a restaurant where, even if you had exceptional service and a tip was very very well deserved, the extra 10-15% would put you in the poor house?

I think your claim that because of labor laws that restaurants have to pay delivery drivers hourly actually takes that honour.

Like it or lump it, it is the standard deal.

If you go to a restaurant or bar and the people working there make their living on tips, you tip them the going rate if they've earned it. You agreed to that when you walked in the door.

If you can't afford to do that, you shouldn't be there.

At this point I'm confused as to what you're trying to say. You claimed drivers don't get an hourly wage, that was proven false by multiple people. You claimed people were making things up, then admitted to making up "99%" instead of providing any evidence at all for that number. You claimed people don't tip drivers because they don't know how drivers get paid, which everyone is agreeing with and is suggesting as part of the problem, but you keep saying it like you're proving a point (when it's become hard to tell what that point is). Sad.
Haha can't believe I missed this. "Multiple people"? You mean your one ad from BP's in August and another guy posting an ad from a town near Edmonton that has a population of 6500?

You claimed delivery drivers got paid hourly because of Canadian labor laws. That was false. You claimed every major pizza place paid their drivers hourly and that was proven false. Malcolm already said he worked for Pizza Hut and got paid per delivery. My brother delivers for pizza73 right now and gets paid per delivery and knows the business inside and out as he goes to school and delivers pizza for several companies to get by. Why can't you just admit you were wrong? I usually wouldn't argue for something this stupid but when thousands of people read this thread I don't want them to think your posts are right and that delivery drivers get paid hourly. The vast majority don't.

A very small minority get paid hourly. Like literally 1%. The rest work for bigger companies that deliver for most pizza places and get paid per delivery. That's not up for debate, it's just the reality of Calgary. I'm sure other cities are different which are bigger and more busier than Calgary.

Your comment makes it seem like tipping is required. It is not.

Agreed. My point was that tipping should never break the bank and you should always go in at least being able to afford a tip, should you decide to give one.

But I guess that's dumb.

Yah. Fair enough.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people, especially in Calgary, fall into that group haha.

If you do not tip you are relying on others to subsidize your experience. So you are a leach if you don't tip.

And if you tip a bad experience you are an idiot.

Why, your tip has no effect on the outcome of said service or future service.

I've also never had a bad experience dining out

I've only had one experience bad enough to warrant not leaving a tip. The place was not busy, us and one other table and at least 4 people working.

- Went up to the bar to get menus
- went back up to the bar to ask for drinks. drinks were delivered.
- went back again to place order.
- order arrived. Food was cold in places; like it was microwaved.
- had to go ask for bill.

I've had the first one or two happen before- usually when the place is busy and is usually met with a sincere apology. Maybe even drinks or appetizer paid for. This time- nothing.

Yes! Or no...

I don't tip for takeout, since you aren't eating there or getting served. But I'm sure someone will come along with some bleeding heart reason why I don't understand how takeout works and how anyone who doesn't tip for takeout is a bad person.

So... maybe?
