The current Flames have a better chance at the cup than the Oilers, even with McDavid. That team is still a leaking ship, just with a heck of a cannon on it. But neither team is a contender either (yet). If the Oilers pushed for it (which I don't think Chia is doing) Iggy probably wouldn't be opposed but I don't see him pushing to get on that team or anything. He knows he wouldn't get top line time any more like the old days and the Oilers would be idiotic to expect the old Iggy and this great mentor for Connor that will change their team from the inside.
If he gets flipped it's likely to an American team in the upper half of the standings that no one had pegged, for peanuts.

One of our greatest, Kent Nilsson, won a Cup in Edmonton.
No one seems to begrudge him that.

Why would they? The situations aren't remotely comparable.

I haven't been following this thread much, just enjoying Tinordi's drive-bys, but I really don't get anxiety and worry here. Is this a situation where Iginla is down to two teams and picks the Oilers over the Flames? Because I really doubt the Flames have interest in him.
I wouldn't cheer him on, as I would with most other teams but I wouldnt cut off all ties like some crazed scorn lunatic ex lover.

For a CP vet you sure aren't very good at this.
Worry now, deal with facts later. You should join the crazed scorn lunatic ex lover train my man. Do it now, while you still can! Otherwise iggy won't get traded or will get traded but to some team in the east no one cares about and you'll have missed your chance.

Haha, also... you can't bring in rational behavior and a lack of crazy emotion at this point. We've all dedicated countless days of our lives getting worked up cheering for and analyzing a bunch of people from random cities we have no personal connection to who have mostly been assigned to Calgary by a draft because they wear the shirt that we like, who try to smash a piece of rubber past another group of randoms we hate because they wear a different shirt .

Our first and seventh all-time scorers are not remotely comparable? Don't be silly.

If this is his swan song of his career I suspect he will only waive to go the the "locks" for SCF whomever those 3-4 teams are by deadline. If Calgary was in the mix then I think he would return. Of course at that point it would depend on the return COL could get,

I'm not sure where you're going with this. So what exactly about their overall situations are comparable other than they are both top 10 in all time scoring and one of them won a cup in Edmonton?
Did Nilsson make it to the finals then lose, only to never make another deep playoff run? Did he get traded in one of the most important turning points in the franchises history? Did he win a cup in Edmonton after a 25 year drought in Calgary? Was it at a time that the oilers were historically terrible but in a playoff spot near the mid season mark?
Basically the only thing in common is that their trades both represented turning points for the franchise. Iggy and our current era, Nilsson and the two cup runs in the 80s.
I don't see what is silly about finding their situations not even remotely similar.

With Iggy on the roster, the hockey gods on our side, Johnson in net, Gaudreau and company driving the play...everyone giving it absolutely everything to help Jarome win the cup. Iggy with that extra hop in his step as he winds up for one final run...
It just has magic written all over it.

Nope...that would be like the Red Blacks beating the Stampeders in the Grey Cup and while being sad the Stamps lost...also being very happy that Henry Burris won.
Good guys like Iggy, Burris, Lanny deserve to be respected and honored no matter which team they play for.

I think when the trade deadline is near, Calgary will indeed be on Iginla's list as the Flames will be among a group of teams that the media will point to as having a good chance to do damage in the playoffs.
The Flames however, I don't think will acquire him until he's ready to retire and they'll sign him for a day to have him end his career as a Flame.

Sorry don't want him back, the culture of the club while he was captain was dreadful. No way do I want the youngsters seeing that again. Also I did not like the way he left the club, yes mostly Feasters fault but Iggy did us no favours at all. So come back for a day and then retire ok, come back to play no thanks.

If that happens I would love to see the Flames organization say nothing and then the first preseason game of the next year the very first Flames player out of the tunnel is wearing number 12.
Bonus points if it is a player where no one expects him to play in the NHL.

That's because all the begrudging happened back in 1987. But I can tell you, we were pretty choked about it at the time. And that was even with the recognition that getting rid of Nilsson in '85 really was addition by subtraction.

In a blind tryout, Iginla doesn't make this team. He's got nothing left. Fleury looked more effective in his tryout than Iginla has looked this season. The team made the right decision then and they should make the same decision now. Stay away from old guys who have nothing left in the tank.
