It became a rule after someone died hitting their head on the ice after a fight

Max Domi is a 5 ft 10 sub 200 lb skill player. I'm never going to fault a smaller player for taking steps to not be ####ed with by the rest of the league. I wish Johnny would lay some dirtball slashes and spears every now and then.

That's fine except he instigates, he's not simply defending himself.

He instigates after perceived questionable conduct. Hathaway took a bit of a run at him. Nothing egregious or out of bounds, but still a bit of a run. Domi responded. Hathaway's a big boy, and hockey is a violent game.

Domi has sent the league a message. Mess with him, and he is going to go right to 'punch you in the face'. There will be no beating around the bush, only beatings around the face.

I'm way okay with that. If someone doesn't want Domi to punch them in the face, they can give him a wider berth. But as long as he's not submarining guys, taking out knees, coming in high with elbows, generally Cooking it up, I have no issues with a player looking out for his own well being.

The refs sure aren't going to protect the skill guys, and teammates barely do at this point. In fact, Domi's fight against Kesler was the result of standing up for a teammate (though the hit that preceded it is barely a hit, by NHL standards). In that instance, where Anaheim is up 2-0 and outshooting Arizona 18-2, I would guess Domi was trying to fire up the troops.

I'd take him on my team.

Retaliating for a clean hit with a dirty one and then dropping the gloves and starting throwing on an unready target is Cooke-esque in my mind.

Plus he took himself off the ice for 7 minutes and deprived his team of his services for 6 weeks due to injury.

I think this behaviour could make him more of a target than less, as it shows that you can get under his skin and teams will trade a 4th liner with him in the penalty box without hesitation.

Arizona Coyotes General Manager John Chayka announced today that forward Max Domi had successful hand surgery today and will be out of the lineup indefinitely. The Coyotes expect Domi to make a full recovery and to return to the lineup later this season.

The 21-year-old Domi was injured in a second period fight with Garnet Hathaway vs. the Calgary Flames on Dec. 8.

As someone else pointed out, I'm not ok with him sucker punching people every time he gets butt hurt about taking a clean hit.

Also, who said anything about not taking him on there team? I'd take him too.

I think Hathaway let up on Domi once he got his jersey over Domi's head. The rest of Domi's flailing was just for show, he couldn't see a damn thing. Hathaway was class all the way through that altercation.

I saw this too and agree with you; I wonder if fighters know when the other guy is hurt? definitely, with the sweater over the head, Hathaway could have really hurt him around the eye even more. I'm glad Hathaway let up.

I've looked at that fight quite a few times and can't see where Domi would've hit Hathaway hard enough to break his hand or finger, or whatever the injury is. I'm wondering if he might have punched the ice, a shin pad, or maybe Hathaway's skate in all his flailing about. He might have even done it twice.

See what I mean in the video at about the 16 and the 19 second mark.
