Just under half a decade.. boy that is a bit of a walk to say 2-3 years.

Haven't seen any highlights, didn't watch the game but going to guess the Oilers won tonight? The troll, old and new, are out.

But it was obvious he wasn't ready yet but they still kept him up, I just god hope they don't ruin him, one of my favorites, he's from my hometown.

It's also amazing how quiet this place was when Oilers lost 5 in a row.

No it's not. These posters are simply trolls with no stamina and low energy levels. When the wind blows against them, they aren't able to post. When they win a game, they find some energy and show up.

They are tremendous losers.

Best to ignore them.

Come on guy. You come out questioning McDavid's abilities and he scores a hattrick in the very next game....

You have to see the absurdity there. Question the Oilers sure. They have a tendency to suck. But why question Mcdavid? It doesn't take a sharp hockey mind to see this kid is for real.

Of course he's for real. I think only the most biased (or stupidest) hockey fan would argue that the isn't for real. He just isn't the 2nd coming of Gretzky the way the media portrays him to be. He's not even the 2nd coming of Crosby at this point in his career.

He's a very talented player, the best player to come around in a long time, but the hype he gets is a little sickening. I can live with it, because the game needs stars to sell the game, but the reality is he's still young and hasn't done much besides put up points.

Yakupov was going to be the next Pavel Bure. The Oilers turned him into the next Oleg Saprykin.

Nugent-Hopkins was going to be the next Joe Sakic. The Oilers turned him into the next Mikko Koivu.

Taylor Hall was going to be the next Mike Bossy. I don't know what the hell the Oilers turned him into, but he's in his 7th NHL season, and is still trying for his first 30 goal season... for another team.

And so on, and so on.

McDavid is supposed to be the next Gretzky. But realistically I'm expecting the Oilers to turn him into something closer to the next Marian Gaborik.

You could do worse than Gaborik with the 1st overall pick (for examples, see above). He scored 165 goals in 283 games between 2005-2010, for a 48 goal pace during his prime years. He cracked 30 goals routinely, broke 40 goals several times, and became a thousand game veteran, All-Star, Olympian, Stanley Cup Champion, etc, etc. Thats what the real deal looks like

In terms of style, like Gaborik, McDavid has amazing separation speed, and does most of his damage on the breakaway, off the rush, and/or with goal-mouth moves at high speed. While McDavid has a few more tools in the toolbox than Gaborik, Gaborik was unquestionably the fastest hockey player I have ever seen, and learned how to play the NHL game under the stifling defence of the Lemaire-era Minnesota Wild. McDavid, well... not so much those things.

But I am confident McDavid will also go on to win a Stanley Cup, long after he has left the team that drafted him, who will still be foundering 15 years later with no end in sight.

Certainly the kid is going to be an excellent hockey player. But the reason why you get so much of a fight here is because of the overselling of McDavid by the media and the Oilers.

In other words we're sick and tired of the hype.

And no I doubt he's the next Gretzky, I even have doubts that he's the next Crosby who to me has a better overall skill set and looks to have way more dimensions to his game.

But if people would stop doing unspeakable things to him everytime he does a good thing on the ice he wouldn't get so much pushback.

But I really hope he's very successful because paying him 12 million bucks a year is going to hurt the Oilers competitively more then it helps them, especially with captain panic move Chia at the helm..

It is not just Flame fans that feel the hyperbole on McD is excessive...I have seen games where young players, around the league, get junk said about them with TV guys, comparing them to what the TV guy thought that McD would have done (no matter how ridiculously miraculous the imagined McD move would have been!). Even last year, in the Calder discussion, the Canadian media seemed to want to compare McD's PER GAME stats, and hype them over Panarin's PER SEASON stats, allowing for no drop off, or ebbs and flows that would inevitably occur when a young player has to grind for the full 82 games. It's like he ALREADY has been voted to the HOF...no knock from me on his talent or potential, but, THIS fan wants to see a body of work over an extended time, before, to paraphrase the late NFL coach Dennis Green, "Crowning his a$$".

As Cali, Backcheck, and Crunch have pointed out, development of talented young players in Edmonton, has not been universally successful, and as talented as McD appears to be, the NHL is a league of adjustments, and there still are facets of his game that have to be cultivated.

This. He's a fantastic player, but he's not Sidney Crosby. Not even close. People forget how good Crosby was. 102 points as an 18 year old! CM wasn't even close to being on pace for that. Crosby is in a league of his own. McDavid is in the same tier as Ovechkin, Tavares, Toews, Kane. Still an elite tier and the real deal. Still among the best in the world. Not Sidney Crosby though.

McDavid has 1 more year left on his ELC. This should have been the Oilers window to be a contender with so many 1st round picks the last, what, 10 years?

They're gonna be so screwed after paying that kid.

Throwing 7 x 6 million at a guy who'll be useless in 2, was a terrible mistake.

And you still post during losses...Oiler trolls only show up after winning a game. And thankfully that hasn't been very often in the last 10 years.
