The clip That's Hockey showed last night of Brower said nothing along the lines of "we do the same" in terms of slashing. He spoke of finishing their checks against star players. The only aspect of his comments that were along the lines of what is being suggested in this thread is that the star players get extra focus.
Just because he calls it "keying on," "finishing our checks" and "making it no fun," it doesn't mean he wasn't talking about slashing the hands.
"Johnny Gaudreau faced a few of those hacks tonight. Did you guys take exception to that? Were you disappointed to see it a little bit?" "I mean... whenever you're a great player, you're going to get keyed on. We do it too. We talk about their top players, and making sure we finish our checks. Making sure we make it no fun for them. So, we have to respond and not let that happen. That being said, it is going to happen once in a while, and I do it to other teams' top players too, but we've also got to do a better job of making sure our presence is felt when something like that does happen."
Tapping...? Tapping..?!? What the hell is Dreger even talking about.
It's a slash, it's been a slash 10+ times a game all season and into last year as well. What a joker.
"Tapping"
I thought it was funny how Dreger babbles about how it's not even a penalty but as soon as Reid points out how these are obviously slashes he changes his tune completely.
Dreger should confine his contributions to telling us what people within the league are saying because there's no substance behind his own opinions on this stuff.

I thought that when the two referee system was implemented, this sort of LAZY penalty would be addressed in greater detail. Obviously, that is not the case. On Tuesday night, Gaudreau was slashed on the hands at total of 21 times by such 'elite' players as Ryan Suter Eric Staal, etc.(Thanks to Darren Haynes and his excellent article in his blog "Flames from 80 Feet above"). Now Gaudreau is gone, the estimate is between 4 and 6 weeks last word that I heard. When is the league and players association going to get together on this and make sure that penalties are called. Not only are these types of penalties lazy, I would go further and say that it is a deliberate attempt to injure. Bettman, direct the officials to be harsh and strict on these types of penalties, players association direct your players to show mutual respect towards each other. It is NOT part of the game, something CAN and MUST be done dammit!!!
It is funny that if you slash the stick out of a player's hand or break the stick it's an automatic call yet a hard slash to the hand isn't called that often. Protect the sticks?

Agree. What really bothers me (and I apologize if this has already been beaten to death) is that the slashing is a strategy emanating from the coaches. It can only be stopped by the league brass instructing the officials to call the penalty aggressively.

It should be noted that some players will weaken their sticks so that will break more easily when slashed. In the old days, you could lean your weight on the stick to weaken it (usually until you hear a little cracking), but still strong enough for a wrist shot or aim a little higher on the ice for the slapshot.

You may be forgetting though, if the stick bleeds it's worth 4
He's set to appear later this afternoon on the Fan 960 during their hot stove segment (unsure the exact time). His comments to the media were posted on various Twitter accounts earlier today. He mentioned having spoken with Johnny among others things but no, did not go off. Not yet at least.
EDIT: Sorry, it was a link to an article posted on Twitter. Treliving is quoted in here

Brad Treliving has an update Johnny Gaudreau: he underwent successful surgery yesterday & there is a 6-week timeline for his return.

Just read the post about Gaudreau. Six freaking weeks, while the idiots who call themselves hockey players get off scot-free. I sometimes think Grapes was right about the old days, let the players police themselves, but then the nambypambies would go crying to the refs. Time for our players to step up to the plate and deal with the players involved on December 2nd.
