We're 5-10-1 after 16 games, the same record we last year at this time. All we heard from BT was Hartley got the team as far as he could. Now we have Gully and no improvement.

Just how long should I hold my ####ing breath???

When they fired Hartley I said I hope we don't start seeing coaching turnover like the oilers.
Now I'm worried that's going to come true.

Several posters in different threads said, that GG is good tactician, analyst and bright hockey mind. Where this reputation comes from? It's not like he invented some brilliant ways to use our players, or has shown anything particularly bright and clever. It almost seems as people want to lambast GG for lack of commanding presence, but they feel the need to appear "fair" and "objective" so they mention that he is smart tactician, although there seems to be no evidence behind it.

At the end of the day, I'm beginning to suspect the Flames' lack of success is due more to the players than coaching. The D isn't nearly as good as everyone thought it was. And neither are the forwards. I'm not sure yet another coaching change is going to make a real difference. This team just needs better players.

Well if Gio, Brodie, Monahan and Gaudreau are not as good as they have shown to be the past two years, I understand your case. I just don't understand how they did what they did the last 2 years if they are not capable of it.

Ask yourself this question. Do you think the players in question would fail on another team with another coach?
I would answer no.

Now ask yourself this question. Do you think this coaching staff would be more successful with other (comparable)players?
I would answer no.

I also believe this coaching staff would not be successful coaching last years cup winning Penguins.

So the players who were posting career years the past two years all of a sudden suck? I think ownership and management ride out the year with GG and find a proper replacement in the summer of 2017.

Career years for a number of players last year, and this year they collectively look terrible.

The coach's systems do not fit the team that he has imo.

Great post. Sums up exactly how I feel about it.

I'd like to see the following:

Gaudreau, Bennett, Brouwer
Tkachuk, Monahan, Ferland
Hathaway, Backlund, Frolick
Shinkaruk , Stajan, F. Hamilton

Giordano, D. Hamilton
Brodie, Jokipakka
Kulack, Engelland

Reasoning: Let's see if taking Monahan as an anchor on Johnny's line will help with first line production. Second line puts two guys that can hopefully inject "boring Sean" with some life and overall enthusiasm. On D- Hamilton needs to be playing top minutes and I could care less about "auditioning" Wideman anymore

The PP structure is on the coaches.

The drop pass at center and everyone standing still at the blue-line waiting for Johnny to carry in the puck is ridiculous.

Having 4 men high and trying to lob shots is laughable.

You have a proven sniper in Monahan, and they have chosen to use him in front of the net trying to tip pucks while being pushed around by 2 defenders.

It is a joke. And is only going to get worse with Johnny out.

Man Gulutzan sounded like a twit on the radio interview today. Does not come across as guy that displays leadership.

He sort of sounds like a shoulder shrug if that makes any sense.

Man I was just having a terrible thought!

Could you imagine the flames continuing the frustrating hockey all season finishing in the bottom 7ish.

Only to have the gm/president stick with the coaching staff for 2017!!!!

A truly terrifying thought!

^ I don't know what that post means but I was pleased with the play of the team tonight.

Many of the first 10 losses were largely deserved losses, and tonight's was not so.

Let's hope the 2 wins followed by this very respectable effort are pointing directionally towards the new norm.

Agree.
It would illustrate stubbornness and unwillingness to the notion of accountability on themselves having made this extremely poor coaching hire decision.
Not practicing what they preach.
Should be interesting what happens or doesn't.

I would say this team turned the corner a little bit. Not quite all the way, but if you haven't seen improvement in the last 3 games, then you have to have the hate goggles on.

I was starting to really lean on the 'fire Gulutzan' side as things weren't improving overall with the play on the ice, and to confound the issue, the younger 'core' players all looked like they took a giant step back.

Things are definitely improving lately on both fronts, even with tonight's loss. Let's see what the next handful of games produces both as results and trajectories. I have said this in almost every post about the coaching staff - results don't quite matter as much right now as how the team is developing overall, since this team is not a Cup contender yet. Playoffs would be a great learning environment, but I am just really more concerned with getting this team playing solid systems and improving how they play, and improving the youth on this team as they will be the backbone of tomorrow's cup contenders.

Gulutzan has at least successfully stayed his execution. It will take more than one disorganized clustercrap of a game to make me lean that way once more, as every team has a few of those a season. I like where they Flames are trending - effort and playstyle - and I look forward to the next 5 games and see where those are trending.
