By merely dismissing people that voted for Trump as dumb or miss informed people are missing the key point of this whole exercise and that's understanding why the people voted the way they did.
If the left or the democrats merely dismiss this results as the voters being dumb, or lazy or misinformed, they're going to doom themselves to losing again and not fixing the mistakes that were made.
Voters aren't dumb, they have their reasons for their votes.

Great post. And I'd add that if you are in Canada you likely don't stand a chance of knowing what those reasons are. Canadian media had me gasp the way I do when I see something on Fox News. Canadian media showed an experienced politician who maybe, but maybe not had an ethics issue or two versus Satan. It totally glossed over many things that were commonly talked about in the us about Clinton. At any time national post or the globe would have 6 different articles about how crazy trump is, and nothing about Clinton.
a great deal of Americans voted against another person or party. There is a lot interest in rebalancing the Supreme Court and killing Obama care. Voting for trump isn't a vote for racism, just as much as a vote for Clinton isn't a vote for corruption. A lot of complexity existed in that decision that almost all Canadians were not exposed to.
Everyone has forgotten that Canada voted in a snowboard teacher. Does that make every Canadian simple?

Why would he win? The biggest complaint is that the choices sucked. More people would vote, because you wouldn't have to hold your nose and vote for someone you didn't like. Trump wouldn't have gotten a lot of the Republican base because he isn't conservative or religious. Those votes would have bled off elsewhere.

They didn't understand their voter base or they chose to ignore the voter base. It goes far beyond your second part because they actually lost support in their own voter base from the last election.
It goes towards a party that got victory fever and arrogant. they also believed their own hype and maybe felt to strongly in the whole Hillary destiny.
However you slice it, I think your over simplifying things and trying to lay the blame on the voters, when the blame should go to the campaign team and Hillary.

You are kidding right? People watched Hillary make promises and was proven to be someone not trustworthy. On top of that, Obama was in charge for eight years and did nothing to correct existing problems, which Hillary said she would fix. Trump nailed it by saying that she was just like Obama, and would not get anything done.
It didn't matter who ran against her, people wanted change. Get over it.

Obama is president. He's not in charge of all branches of government.

Sure, but it's not like Canadians don't have access to and consume a huge amount of US media.

It amazes me how Trump won the most states and the popular vote and people still think he is the most hated candidate / worst candidate ever.
Majority of Americans voted for him. Landslide win. Mainstream media no longer has a stronghold on shaping the views of the American people, because they have been proven to be liars and corporate shills.
Drudgereport is the most widely viewed news publication in the United States now.
Infowars routinely gets more views on their videos than mainstream media youtube videos.
People in this thread can deny it all they want.

I'm not saying smart people are limited to Democrats. I'm saying she pandered too much to people who can actually comprehend her words, and assumed the dumb Democrats would vote for her regardless.
She wanted to seem experienced, because she had the women factor (ie, wouldn't know how to lead) and assumed people clearly could see how dumb Trump is, but the fact is most people are as dumb as him and she lost sight of that because she's an idealist

Trump didn't win the popular vote.
Trump won about the same amount as Romney. Folks stayed home instead of voting for Clinton.

Yes, they can, because you're full of crap. The majority of Americans voted for Hillary.

I wonder how many soft Democrats thought Clinton was a sure thing and didn't bother voting. Kind of like a tortoise and hare situation.

Point #5 is completely stupid. Yeah she looks to have won the popular vote, but a whopping 0.3%? Clearly the system is completely broken!!

My mistake. I just looked again, and right now Hillary is around 200,000 votes ahead.

Landslide win is also a bit much. A 2% change in two states means she wins the election. It was a comfortable win, not a convincing win.

The problem with point 5 is that it's also whining. Any side that gets the popular vote and not the college would most likely whine about it.

I think that is the pleasant fiction many people who took the anarchist's choice and voted Trump want to believe.
But we have already seen at the state level what the Republicans seek to do - and I am not talking about Trump, but about the House and the Senate. And we know the SCOTUS is about to become heavily Republican. Jammies noted that amendments to the US Constitution have all but stopped. A large part of that is due to the Supreme Court treating it like a living document rather than rigid. This has, of course, resulted most dramatically in the irony of Second Amendment fetishists arguing that it is set in stone when the reality is that the SCOTUS simply re-interpreted it.
And, of course, there is the laughable idea of an alleged billionaire 1%er with a dramatic multi-decade history of being a self-absorbed narcissist who seeks only to enrich himself will blow the whole thing up to the benefit of the public.
I think the reason why people are so terrified is actually certainty. We have no reason to anticipate the next 2-4 years will be any good.
