This was always clearly a LTIR move, I'm not sure what the big deal is/was. They probably had to give him a few games to actually get him to sign the contract in the first place. As well, the NHL probably looks at these things to to ensure teams aren't trying to circumvent the cap. Probably had to play him a little bit so the move wasn't too transparent.

... McDavid won't get 4+ breakaways vs the Flames.

I'm with you. It was a useless PTO and signing. If he wasn't available for Gulutzan to use, problem solved. It's not really a chicken/egg scenario, he didn't belong on the opening day roster and somehow ended up there.

I could see them having a handshake agreement to get some games in like they did with Backstrom.

The signing was very specific and had to do with maximizing LTIR room from Smid.

It's your "black mark" comment that people are disputing. Every team has contracts like Grossman that eventually go through waivers . There would be no waivers if there wasn't. If this is a black mark on Flames gm, then every other GM in the league has the same black mark.

It goes down $575,000. It will still be over the cap, so Smid's LTIR space will still be available.
It will also open another spot on the 23 man roster (which is currently at 22 with Bouma and Versteeg on IR). We'll almost certainly see one forward recalled tomorrow. I suspect we'll see two.
If I were to guess, I'd say we'll see Hathaway and Vey recalled, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Klimchuk or Jankowski get the call.

Did you read my post? Your comment makes you appear clueless and guess what? You still are. Grossmann wasn't even a hockey signing. It was a technicality to get the max cap relief from LTIR. He was nothing but a pawn the entire time. If we didn't have the Smid situation Treliving never would have signed him.
It's on Gulutzan for actually giving him icetime.

If i recall the rule changes made, despite being waived and sent down, his full salary will be counted against the cap.

I get why they signed him. If you look at defensemen in Stockton who could see NHL time this year you have 5 players your looking at. Wotherspoon, Kylington, Andersson, Morrison and Culkin. It's good depth but none of those guys is a true physical defensive defender. Wotherspoon has potential but hasn't shown it at the NHL level yet, so BT signs Grossman, who fills a depth role and checks some boxes that are missing organizationally.
Where the disconnect for me comes in is having him make the team out of camp. He clearly showed he wouldn't be able to handle regular minutes at the NHL level during the preseason. And to have him play over Jokipakka and Kulak at any point this season is just outrageous. Not that either of those 2 has set the NHL on fire, but they are clearly miles ahead of Grossman.

I still don't understand why he was signed to a one-way.

His contract is fully buriable in Stockton. None of his salary will count against the cap should he be assigned.

You can bury up to 950k. His contract is less than that so sending will not result in a cap hit going forward.

I get the logistics of signing Grossmann for maximizing cap purposes, but why the hell did we let him play? Perhaps Treliving should have told Gulutzan to staple his ass into the press box. I can't even fathom how he got another game after the Edmonton one. Keegan Kanzig would have done better, and he's in the ECHL.

How is that different from signing him to a two-way?

Iīd get signing Grossman if we ran into some injuries on the backend, but not at camp. And itīs not even because he had a mediocre camp. Why not let one of the kids prove they can/canīt hack it before signing a guy like this. Would Wotherspoon really have been much worse or given up the puck more?
