Are you sure?
They could all be wearing sweatpants masquerading as dress pants.....because those actually exist.

Did you guys hear? Mcdavid and Mathews are playing against each other tonight. Just FYI in case you haven't heard it on the 10 headline stories on each website.
It's also Mcdavid's first visit to Toronto, so yeah. This is basically bigger than the SCF.

Well you have two of the biggest future superstars playing for both Canadian teams. The NHL has every right to promote this game, McDavid vs Matthews will be the new rivalry.

It's not the NHL, it's news outlets.
No player is bigger than the game IMO and rivalries like Flames/Oilers Habs/Bruins will always be bigger than individual star players.
But that's just me.

No they won't.
Rivalries develop when players play against each other. They'll only play head-to-head twice a year and the only chance they have of meeting in the playoffs is the Stanley Cup Final...So, there's pretty much no chance of that happening.
Washington and Pittsburgh have played each other 58 times (including the playoffs) since Crosby and Ovechkin entered the league. The 58th time the Oilers and Leafs will play each other after tonight will be sometime around 2045.

To further the McDavid vs Matthews "rivalry" thing, other than they'll only play each other twice a year, the games will be meaningless. If anything, the loser of the game will get the better player in the draft. I understand why they want to hype it but it doesn't really matter if they're playing against each other or not as it's 2 garbage teams.

Perhaps we could dispense with the actual game, and we could have that old 2nd period HNIC staple "Showdown" between McDavid and Matthews for the points.

McDavid named 1st star for October. Shea Weber 2nd, Jonathan Marchessault 3rd.
https://www.nhl.com/news/connor-mcda...er/c-283293356
Edmonton may be no good, but Connor McDavid is not no good...if you follow me.
I had to laugh at Marchessault getting 3rd star. Talk about getting a performance from someone out of nowhere. The guy is en fuego.

Depending on who you were talking to, Marchessault wasn't really out of nowhere. He was one of the more hyped "dark horse" free agents among the analytics folks. He's been generally undervalued for being 5'9 and 175, which isn't a new story, but even in Tampa was putting up 1.7 points per 60 minutes. They're just so deep at forward they weren't playing him much.
Obviously he won't keep up quite this scoring pace (his personal shooting percentage should probably be about half of what it is), but he's going to be a good pickup.

For whatever reason it seems to be the players hyped more in the U.S. while it is teams hyped more in Canada when there is a game. But whichever gets the league more exposure is going to be the way the league wants it.
e.g. - It's Aaron Rodgers and the Packers taking on Tom Brady and the Patriots when you see the NFL being pro-mo'd.
I have no problem promoting this one as McDavid vs. Mathews. It's also McDavid's homecoming IIRC. His first NHL game in his home town so that is a big deal at least for him. He missed last year's game due to injury i believe.

Fair enough, I just had him penciled in on the 3rd or 4th line in Florida this year and he came out of nowhere to make Huberdeau expendable. Just surprising is all since he had all of 18 points last year.

Ha Ha...the Kool-aid in Edmonton has their fans giddy, and Las Vegas is positioning to relieve any Oil fans, foolish enough to gamble on them, of their cash...
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/oilers-...183646944.html
Vegas make the Oil 2nd favorite for the Cup, at 10-1 tied with the 'Hawks, Caps, Lightning, and Habs, just behind the Pens who are listed at 9-1

I am always cautious of the 'points per 60mins' thing from the analytics community. Lots of players seem to score well on the bottom lines with limited playing time on deep teams, but when they get elevated they often don't increase their overall scoring by much even with the additional TOI. They just took advantage of the relatively low quality of competition and maybe just had a linemate or two that just 'clicked' with their game.
Sometimes they pan out though, but often they just don't. I was kind of excited years ago when the Flames signed an Oilers' castoff who had a very high points/60 ratio. Turned out to be no more than an AHL player that year. You just never know.
