Where's your top line center Monahan ? Gaudreau not going for a while and Monahan is lost. And you pay this plug guy top center money.

I don't think scoring is the problem. Monahan as 4 goals and Johnny has 7 points. Secondary scoring is there.
It's the defence that needs to step up IMO.

Pretty meh game from a pretty meh team so far. Maybe it's the problem with the first month of the NHL season where the same teams come out on fire (Habs) and the same teams struggle (Flames) on an annual basis but it's hard to get emotionally attached to this team or league when the NFL and World Series is going on. Hopefully the Flames can start playing more inspired hockey soon as outside of a couple of really good road games it's been sloppy and boring hockey to open the season.

Was at the dome.
First of all, people who lean over their seats are the worst, sit back you idiot.
Anyways, the worst player for the Flames by far was Monahan. Right now he's dragging down Gaudreau. Too many plays dying on his stick, bad passes, off sides, missed open shots. You name it, he was very frustrating to watch. Gio was close second.
The score was a lot closer then the game play. There were several shifts where Cap just toyed with the Flames and Elliott making awesome saves.
The Caps forcheck and cycle game was a thing of beauty. Flames got a lesson on how to do it properly, let's see if they took any notes.

Hmm, most of the time I see Gaudreau try to make plays all by himself and then when he doesn't have a play, he throws the weakest of weak passes to the opposition and the rush or pressure dies there. I counted 4 or 5 occasions last night where if Johnny puts anything on the pass it probably goes to a Flame, but instead it was easily taken by a Cap.

Gaudreau has had terrible body language since the start of the season. Not sure if it's the pressure of trying to live up to that contract or frustration in trying to learn a new system but he doesn't look like a player having fun out there. I think it's past time Gulutzan moved Johnny to a different line as Monahan looks to have settled comfortably into being a passenger on the Gaudreau train and Chiasson is dragging the line down because he's not a finisher. Personally I would demote Monahan to 3rd line duty to send him a message that more is expected of him.

Nothing is stopping Johnny from stepping up his game.
He was frustrated at times last season and would swear and slam his stick. Then he would go out and create something on the ice.
This season he laments his play, then just keeps doing the same thing. I'm sorry, but you wanted the big contract, now play like a big contract player. That's how these things work.

The PP needs to get going ASAP. It's really killing any momentum the flames built up over the game. Going 0% is embarrassing at home. and Cameron better figure it out or he may not be in Calgary for much longer.

It was bad against the Caps, but the prior game they looked OK and scored two within a couple seconds of the PP ending.
I thought the Caps simply outworked the Flames last night.

Monahan is really struggling. His timing is way off....he'll hold onto the puck when he should head man it, make a guy stop at the blueline to stay onside, and then pass him the puck when he's flat footed.
This is very unlike Monahan. He's usually doing all the little things right and using his head to get an advantage.
He also looks like he's skating in quick sand.
Hopefully just a combination of no training camp and a new system and he'll get over it soon, but boy he does not look good.

I'm not saying the bolded part is wrong, but Monahan is in the same boat, probably more so.

I'm totally confident that both young men will get with the program soon.
The discussion was just about Johnny's apparent bad attitude on the ice.

Yeah I would move Monahan and run.

It's hard to get both Johnny and mony to get going when they are both playing below expectations. Get them going somehow and then reunite them.

I was at the game last night and have a few comments to make...
Johnny needs to start simplifying things a bit. I'd be curious to see what the turnover numbers were but if I had to guess, I'd say he had at least half a dozen. That entire top line looked disjointed last night and other than one outstanding rush, they really didn't look dangerous at all.
Dennis Wideman was brutal. I've been hating on the guy for a long time now but to his credit, he looked great against Chicago and St. Louis on the road trip. Last night though he seemed to be back to trying too much and playing outside of his abilities. It is what it is at this point I guess, however I fail to understand why he gets spoon fed over 20 minutes when he's clearly struggling.
I really liked Bennett's game and he lead the team with four hits. He is a great skater and really seems to be figuring things out nicely at this level.
Backlund and Frolik were great. They do all of the little things well and you can constantly see their heads on a swivel in the defensive zone looking for their assignment.
Elliott was stellar and gave the team a chance to come back. Without him making three or four great saves, this game is probably over after 20.
Long story short, the Flames came out flat and were down 2-0 before they got their legs going. They need to jump on teams that are playing their second of back to backs and tonight they let Washington take it to them early on.
I honestly don't think they played that poorly overall, but Washington got that PP goal whereas Calgary looked like they were killing a penalty on their two PP opportunities.
Oh one more thing, they need to start hitting the net.

His poor defensive coverage costs the team significantly in terms of momentum and mental energy.
His coverage on the second Caps goal last night was horrid, absolutely horrid.

The Flames must have missed the net 10 times with prime scoring chances.

This game was winnable but missing the net on multiple great scoring chances is unacceptable. I don't know how many times I yelled "get it on net you idiot" last night. Trying to make that perfect shot every time, stupid.

good D + bad D ≠ average pair
good D + bad D = bad pair
it's simple math. I know GG is trying not to have one disaster bottom pair, but that's just not how it works. drink a mixture of half fresh milk and half spoiled milk and you're going to be puking just the same.
if you have one super pair, at least there's a decent chance they'll help generate a lead, so that you can afford a couple of scary minutes of Engelland and Wideman together. but that's almost besides the point, since the lineup should never have both of those guys in the same game anyways.
