McLellan alluded to it in a presser late last year, one of the ones where he went off on his team, or maybe it was the beatdown by the Flames....but said he can't cancel the day off because of rules. I don't think he cares this time around, when he sees the players getting lit up with a dose of reality against Buffalo after those same players were enjoying the shameless media up there sniffing their butts after the first two games.
I still think he's a good guy, but, like so many players and managers before him (Erik Cole, Pronger, Renney, Quinn, Souray, Perron etc etc) who arrived to fanfare but quietly and some not so quietly, exited quickly, he got sold a bill of goods in order to joint the team, that was far from reality when he set foot in the door. A scenario with the total lack of discipline, team concept and confidence in every regard, of once decently skilled players who were wasting away and regressing. Players that they basically had to give away, and some on the team that he can't give away, that are still driving him nuts, and of course, now he's "stuck".

Unless he's just as stupid as the player (Pouliot) he accused of being stupid there's no way McLellan didn't know what he was getting into when he took that job. He was hired specifically to correct those issues and to date has failed and it's on him as much as it is the players because the way he's going about things is not the way you get men to respect and follow your lead. Darryl Sutter was tough on his players but you he never pulled stunts like this and never embarrassed players in the media. That's the difference between a mediocre coach and a great coach.

that's an unfair comparison. One guy is a proven top coach in the league, and a multi-cup winner. The other, well the precedent is that good teams are finally able to emerge once he leaves

The Oilers will break that precedent...

Yup. Which is another reason why the NHLPA is going to go after them. The Oilers already have a history of violating the CBA. The problem is that the NHL won't hold them accountable for it.

Some hefty fines to Katz ought to do the trick.

Really though, what would that matter in the whole scope of things? Any fine levied surely wouldn't be more than the equivalent of me being fined a half a penny for some misdeed.

Unless the players handle this correctly it has the ability to create a divide in the room. Let's see how McCaptain handles it. If he screws it up it could hurt the team, at least in the short term.

If you hit him with a 200k fine, he may politely ask McLellan to start respecting the rules of the CBA.
Even if that's a 100 bucks to him relatively speaking, no one likes losing money because of a avoidable circumstance.

I don´t get McLellan´s overreaction. As bad as the Flames were in those first two games, the Oilers still gave up 8 goals. They scored a lot but half their goals were thanks to McJuicebox. Their d is still terrible and the first two games should have reinforced that, regardless of what McSquishy did offensively

The players told him, not verbally, but physically, that this was ok to do.

To be fair, that's from when Over McRated was named captain of Team NA, not for this practice debacle.
