Makes sense to me -- if I missed time in the lockout I'd want to make sure I got what I fought for. Oilers gonna oil.

Not only is it wrong, but it screams of desperation. They're trying too hard here.
What if they play poorly next game? Now it's panic mode because they have already sounded the alarms.
Act like pros and say 'we sucked - we'll be better next game'

McLellan has been around long enough to know better. With him ripping players in front of the cameras and pulling stunts like this it's only a matter of time until the players start tuning him out.

Exactly, and of course the 19 year old captain without a family (presumably, I mean how much do we really know about McDavid) was the one to initiate the change. THIS is why you don't make a 19 year old with zero life experience the captain.

You don't become the City of Champions by spending "time with family".

From the CBA...
Quote:
(a) Clubs shall provide each Player with a monthly travel/practice schedule prior to each full month of the Regular Season indicating the days that have been designated as days off for each Player. Clubs shall endeavor to schedule no less than four (4) days off for Players per month (up to two of which may be scheduled on the road) during each full calendar month of the NHL Regular Season. A day off shall be a day off for all purposes, except that if a Club travels following the conclusion of a game, the next day may be considered a day off if the Club is scheduled to arrive at its destination city by no later than 2:00 a.m. local time. If a Club travels on the day following a game (i.e., stays at a hotel overnight and departs the following morning), such day may not be considered a day off. The parties recognize that events may unfold such that the monthly schedule may need to be altered or modified to adjust for unforeseen and compelling circumstances. League scheduled off-days or breaks (e.g., All-Star break, Holidays, Olympics) shall count as a day off for purposes of this subsection (a).

The Oilers playing like garbage should definitely not qualify as unforeseen circumstances.

They should forfeit their 1st overall pick this year and have to give it to their rivals

There are a lot of reasons to rip on Edmonton, and rightfully so. From the incompetent ownership, management, to the smug media and fans. But this isn't one of those reasons.
The Oilers are a team you'd expect to happily take a vacation day even after s####ing the bed. This is an uncharacteristic move for them and I'd argue that it's one that helps rather than hinders, at least on the ice. It's little things like this that help establish a culture.
Though I think coach McLellan takes it a bit far by insulting his players intelligence in front of the media like that. There's putting your foot down then there's giving reason for your players to turn on you.
Have played enough team sports I know the importance of having a coach that makes you feel a part of the team, even when you have a bad game. And as soon as there is that bitterness towards them, you stop caring about what they are preaching.

This is a time to rip on them because they had a cba mandated day off, and because they had a bad game the night before isn't a reason to change it.

Right. Because it's just that simple,
"Hey guy's you know what we should accept? Being no good."
That isn't their problem. Their problem is organizational arrogance which breeds a bottomless about of entitlement (in fans & management despite unprecedented failure) that they are somehow smarter or above everyone else. This furthers only furthers that mindset.
It's also why they fail to build rapport with other organizations and think they'll outsmart everyone on every deal they make.

embarrassing as it is to admit its not just one bad game for the Oilers...They played like garbage all 3 games. 13 goals against in 3 games (no EN goals)
Flames just handed them the first two, they didn't play well other than a couple individual efforts and a little help from Wideman/Grossman/Refs

Lol, I highly doubt the NHL or the other owners are impressed with a coach turning a blind eye to the CBA. It's 4 days a year and it's not even a week into the season, such unwarranted drama. Typical oilers to #### with one of the very few things the players are in control of during the season.
