Chad Johnson on the Flames slow start

Quote:
“Still, we can tighten up as a group,” Johnson said. “We had some breakdowns there where guys were coming straight down. Again, I said this at the start, it’s going to take us a bit of time for us to be comfortable with the systems. It’s a process.

“I saw (the Flames) last year so I think there’s a little bit of hesitation right now defensively. Again, it’s only going to get better as the season goes on.”

Quote:
“I think that people that know hockey know there is an adjustment period with a new coach and with new systems,” netminder Chad Johnson said after stopping 30 of 31 shots in the losing effort. “We all want to come out right away and be as strong as the Chicago Blackhawks and the L.A. Kings. But they’ve been together for five or six years with the same coach and the same systems. There’s an adjustment period, especially for this group. Everybody has to be patient. We have to be patient. Everyone knows that the players and the organization — we want to do well.

“We want to win. Again, there’s a process.”

"And it is a process. Any time there are changes, you’re hoping to see quick results..... It’s a process of learning how to win." - Brouwer

"... the results will come. They may lag. But they’re going to come. You have to believe in the process." - Gulutzan

Hey guys, I think there may be a process

Not at all.

There are many excellent posters here sharing nothing but their thoughts about hockey. The humour is often a welcome diversion.

But there is far more noise than humour, or thoughts about hockey.

I was simply trying to raise the level of discourse on CalgaryPuck.

It often gets so bogged down with "he said, she said" crap, and worse, that to read a viewpoint, articulately related, is really a breath of fresh air!

Is that so wrong?

Who doesn't want to share their passions with others and to learn from contrary viewpoints?

Does the fact that I choose the words that I am comfortable using in my everyday life lessen my contributions?

If that is the case, I may look elsewhere to share my love of hockey.

I suspect that others might share my passion for the sport and our team.

We will find out together.
Did you read too much Nietzsche and decide it has something to do with hockey? Or a hockey forum?

The teams that have done really well CONSISTENTLY have what I define as 'culture'. Now, every player that comes in and out of the locker room in Calgary all say the same thing - who wonderful everyone is and how tight-knit this group is. That is not really what I am talking about.

I am talking about how a solid group of teams in this league - LA, Chicago, Detroit and New Jersey all come to mind - that can bring in players from different teams and make them work within that 'system' that they have. It stops mattering so much who is on the team, but everyone still plays the way that the team expects and is known for, regardless of time and personnel.

New Jersey for me is the tops on the list. Lemaire came in, and for better or worse, changed that team into a (boring) defensive juggernaut that they have maintained through most coaches and players coming and going (though I wouldn't argue if someone pointed out that in the last year or two, it has changed a bit - but you know what I mean).

Since the 90's, that team has essentially played the same way. Detroit is so well known for this as well. Once Yzerman listened to Bowman and played a strong 200ft game, that team has been following suit every since. Name a star on that team, and you can bet your house that the stare plays a 200ft game. Those that don't, are weeded out. Players go there, and they instantly 'get it'.

I think it is really difficult to start that. Takes time. Lots of perseverance. I hope the Flames get it. There are (and have always been) way too many defensive breakdowns on this team in every year outside the Darryl Sutter years (and the lone Playfair year, though less so).

I can't say that Gulutzan will or won't get this on track, but regardless of the immediate results, this team needs some culture. The only culture that I can point to on this team is the lack of consistency. Feaster made a mention of this, that this team was 'sick' or something to that nature. Hartley patched some stuff up, and we rode a wave into the playoffs by just having a strong 'hard working' culture. That was great, but now it is hard-working + a system that becomes ingrained as a culture, where everyone buys in, and everyone is held accountable to it.

This is what I HOPE we are seeing as the implementation of it. Hope it works.

If I knew someone who talked this pretentiously to my face, I would beat feet in a hasty retreat.

Wait... why exactly was itsmagic banned? I get that he was posting like someone had just hit him in the head with something, but it was funny as hell, and he didn't seem to have broken any rules. Is it because he's an Oilers fan? That's disappointing. FOI forum entertainment value greatly diminished.

I quoted and bolded this because a lot of CP posters are not falling into this category . You guys are better than that.

Many posters are not falling into this category because of the bolded.

There's a depressing amount of posters on here who don't look past the win/loss column.

It's really tough not to be skeptical though, since the last time the Flames tried to go from a run and gun / zero defense strategy (Keenan) to a strong defensive / puck possession strategy (Sutter), it resulted in failure and no playoff appearances.

The team was able to get the goals against down in Sutter's first year coaching (23rd to 5th), but the goals for was the exact opposite (7th to 29th).

It just seems like the organization has a hard time finding a coach that can get the team to play a strong defensive game combined with a strong offensive game.

I really hope they've found that guy in Gulutzan, and the Flames turn into a consistent contender.

I'm already skeptical that GG will be any better than Hartley. I still think Bob should of got one more season. GG deserves more than 3 games however before the pitch forks come out. Its just sad to come in and dig a hole every season early on when there is teams with new coaches that come in flying out of the gate.

How many rebuilding teams with new coaches come out flying? Yes veteran teams that need that extra push to go to next level seem to do all right, but i don't think Calgary falls into that category.

alright, i'm done bashing and being upset about the start so far. I'll buy the whole 'process' thing.

I will be refraining from complaining/whining/b*tching about individual/team performance until there is enough of a data set to do so (10-12 games).

May mean i should stop drinking while i watch the games to stay level headed as they go thru this "process". That's what hurts the most

It's a tad premature to call for GG to be fired.

Normally, we wait until the 4th game of a new coach's career for that.

I think most of us can agree that it takes time to institute a new system. The best players and best coaches in the word should be pretty good at it though.

IIRC Trotz had a rough start when he went to Washington. Obviously as a seasoned guy he had a longer leash, but it shows it can happen to the best and patience is needed.
