I actually thought the Flames beat themselves last night more that it was McDavid beating them.
McDavid got gifted a penalty shot, got one off what was great anticipation on his part to read the bounce off the boards but was still lucky, and then got a second assist on a bad change by Calgary.
Kid is already a top 5 player in the league but I'm not sure I'm anymore worried about playing him than I am Crosby or Kane.

It's OK to hate the team, but respect/recognize the fact they have probably the best player in the world on their team right now. Steamrolling the Oilers isn't going to happen every time anymore. Get used to it. It's actually a bit of a blessing we only get them 4 times this year.

Sure, he was good, but his first goal was a bad play by Elliot, and the penalty shot shouldn't have happened.
Even his assist was a secondary assist, and the play really didn't have anything to do with him, and the goal was mostly because of a bad change.
With "normalized" goaltending, refereeing, etc, he probably ends up with no points last night.

Every year there is an overreaction from fans and media based on the first 60 minutes of play.
Certain players look like world beaters, certain teams get praised, some look terrible, some players look awful. But like every season game 30 is different from game 10 is different from game 1.
It's what is shown over the 7 months of the season that defines teams and players more than what they do in one game, particularly one as disjointed as that.
McDavid will have cold streaks like he did at the WCH where Matthews basically helped him get on the scoresheet at all, and people will question him. Last night it was at the other end of the spectrum. Overall he'll be good, probably great. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Not about the player, and not about the team. Neither team played good hockey. And miles from playoff caliber hockey.
So if the Oilers want to pat themselves on the back, then by all means. But I think the fans with a head on their shoulders understand the meaning of patience and not gauging too much from one game, especially when it's game 1/82.

I really don't care much about McDavid. I'm just stoked that the Flames have Gaudreau and Brodie. McDavid is only good in that it'll finally ignite the rivalry between the Flames and Oilers. It would've been a perfect night for Gaudreau/ Monahan and Gio/Brodie to really ruin their opener in that beautiful arena. If that would've happened, all of Edmonton would've mulled over how bad that arena is for them for years! Opportunity wasted.

I'll never forget how dominant we looked that 1 year (2009? 2010?) in the season opener against the Canucks. Beat them 5-3, and looked like absolute world-beaters in the process. I remember Brandon Prust in particular, looking like a man possessed that year. We started the season with 4 wins in a row, and scored more goals in those games than we knew what to do with.
Missed the playoffs that year, and had the worst GF in the league.
EDIT: I'm positive we were wearing the retro jerseys in that opener too. Are they seriously that old?

That was the first 4 games under Brent in 2009. Then he got his fangs into the team and the offence dried up.
But I don't think the team looked very good in the game you are referencing. We simply outscored our problems to start the season.

Hmm... I could be glorifying the past.
I do remember checking out the Nucks message board after that game though, and they were openly commenting on how scary that Flames team looked, with some of them even throwing around 'cup contenders'.

I think it was the year they first introduced the retros, albeit in the old, and much better CCM 6100 cut (with a RBK stamp). 30th anniversary was it?

Those were awful. Especially the goofy neckline. There was a reason they only kept that for a brief period and then improved the neckline and cut

I'm sorry, but McDavid was good out there. He looked scary good many times that didn't result in goals also. Comments like, well if you took away his points, he'd have gotten no points really don't make sense. Mistakes, luck occur on every single NHL goal, so you can't really say things like, if you take those away, what would he have, cause you could also argue that he should have gotten some points that he didn't.
He played very well last night, rose to the occasion, us trying to spin it any other way simply isn't right.

Yeah the neckline was bad with the NHL shield on the front but I much preferred the heavy pro-weight CCM style jerseys to the now atrocious Edge lines, though I am sure the players prefer the latter.

I agree, but I haven't seen anyone say he's a bad player. All I've seen is people sick of hearing about him, and they're right.
I don't have to like or respect McDavid just because he's amazing at hockey. I hate him with a burning fiery passion.

Of course, McDavid will get his points. Just pointing out that all of his points last night came from easily correctable mistakes.

Except the penalty shot. No amount of coaching and preparedness will prevent the refs from screwing ya.

The part that really bothers me is that call was in the most crucial moment of the game. The game was going one of two ways and Calgary was stealing momentum and trying to take over. The 30 seconds decided the game and it was 100% determined by a referee.
Such a blatantly biased call ruins the game, without an illusion of fairness the game loses all of its appeal. It's like the game Mario Party. Try as hard as you want don't matter you'll get screwed randomly and the undeserving get rewarded. It destroys the fun of true competition because there is no competition anymore. It becomes a game of politics, dollars, careers and emotions. None of which I give a #### about, all I want is to watch one team compete against another but we didn't get that, we got a ref deciding the game for us in the most crucial moment. Fairly off putting start to the season.

allowing 40 shots and 2 SH goals isn't how you win in the NHL

lol
I wish we played them 20 times because that team looked like complete garbage after McDavid.
They won't have terrible reffing and Hiller-esque goaltending to save them every game.

I can't hate Mcdavid, he's one of (if not THE) best players on the planet right now. Guy is straight up unbelievable, and I 100% respect what he is capable of.
I CAN however hate the oilers for sucking so badly that they got rewarded with a generational talent. Hate that team, can't stand most of the fans, and I hope they win 1000 preseasons while never making playoffs ever again. I will never respect anything they do because of how they did it.

What game were you watching? Also last team I checked the goalie is part of the "team". Has a goalie ever gone from best save pct. in the league to worst save pct. the next season? Could see that happening fairly easily.
