How is this loss on the D pairings?
I don't understand.
The D pairings didn't cause the refs to be terrible.
The D pairings didn't cause Elliot to be terrible.
Flames had a tough first period with a couple bad mistakes by Grossman and a terrible line change.
In the 2nd the Flames took over until the refs decided to call everything on Calgary while letting everything go for the Oilers.
Flames still said "#### you" to the refs and tied it up anyways with two beautiful shorties only to have Elliot let all the air out of the party balloon with an awful goal to McDavid on a lucky bounce off the boards.
Then the refs let Gaudreau get mauled at one end and then call that absurd penalty shot for McDavid.
Still the Flames were the better team for the rest of the game after that garbage.
It wasn't perfect, but I don't see how we can hang this loss on the D pairings.

My d pairings
Giordano-Brodie
Hamilton-jokipakka
Engalland-kulak/wideman
You ride the top 4 when it's 5 on 5, I mean ride them like Darrylsutter used to do. Jokipakka gets a break on the pp and either wideman or kulak plays. Engelland gives guys a break on the pk. It's not difficult.

I thought Wideman was just OK tonight - there were lots of bigger problems.

100% agree.

Kevin - Kulak/Engelland

I don't mind Grossman as the 7th defenseman but why would you sit Jokipakka in favor of him? Did I miss something? If it's because they thought the Oil had some big guys so they wanted some size in the lineup? If that was the case, why take out Jokipakka who is big and mobile? Why not take out Wideman who is small and slow?
As for Grossman's actual play, his first period give away killed him. Didn't really matter how much better he played the rest of the way.
I like that Tkachuck was trying to stir stuff up all night long. But what the hell was up with Ferland and Bouma? Throw a hit? Cause some ruckus? Start a fight? Seemed like both guys were scared that they would have to fight or something if they got too physical. Really disappointed with both. Maybe they actually need Bollig there to give them some balls, which is even more disappointing. I'm sick of the gentlemenly code honoring play of our tough guys, we need more guys like Tkachuk. I hear Steve Downie is looking for a job.
What can you say about Elliot? Glad they haven't signed him to an extension yet. How do you let Zach Kassian deke you out of your jockstrap? That was a real back breaker, even though they ended up tying it.
I'm really not that upset about the defensive pairings. It's not like the Flames were hemmed in a lot or the Oilers took the play to them. Really, they had some bounces and Elliot was crap. He should have had the 2nd, 3rd and 6th goals, and Mcdavid's first goal was a bad bounce.

The Flames didn't do enough good things to win, and didn't play a good game.
But did anyone expect that the deck wouldn't be stacked against any team playing the Oilers in their home opener in a new buiding.
The reffing was an absolute disgrace.
But at the same time the Flames played poorly.

It's going to take more than one game to really evaluate the different pairings however, when/if we are down in the third and need a goal going back to Gio/Brodie needs to happen. Those two carry our team from the back end and need to be put out there for the push.

I just got home. I was getting alerts throughout the afternoon and checked the GT a couple of times.
Sounds like there were lots of problems. Should I even bother to watch this disaster? (I was so excited for the start of the season)

Flames did play poorly, but I'm not surprised by that at all given the circumstances.
What I didn't expect was for Elliot to look like Jonas Hiller circa 2015/16 V2.0 and for the reffing to leave the Flames players and fans walking funny.
Just a terrible job of officiating.

Don't think the Flames are in enough of a panic to swing a trade with the Hurricanes to bring back Nakladal just yet. Maybe next week.

Looking at some stats, man, Calgary allowed a lot of shots from the slot.
Minus the last 10 minutes of the first period, we had good possession of the puck.

Delete the game from your PVR.
... then smash your PVR with a hammer.

I try not to whine about the refs, but that game was an abomination. Sometimes I wonder if the tinfoil hat wearers arent right.

It wasn't the refs fault the Oilers scored on their first shot of the season. Grossmann being on the roster was.
