I expect JG to be really good post-29 years old. These smaller players seem to go for a long time. BUT, there are fewer mistakes with medium term contracts than with long ones. The Flames have made them, so have lots of other teams. And with only two years to go on, the risk of a longer term contract was all on the Flames.

If JG is still an elite player at 29, great, make a good faith effort to sign him and pay him a lot of money. The Flames have first dibs. But the stats show that he will likely be on the decline by then. If he wants to move to be closer to home, the Flames didn't have a good shot at re-signing anyway, and by year 6 they'd be looking at trades anyway, in a 7 or 8 year deal.

Wrong.

The rumour first came from Hillary Clinton's camp during the 2012 campaign.

Another team, if they want to offer him 80M, must do so only until age 35 (11.4M AAV)

We still retain leverage over the UFA market and a retirement contract until age 36 if manageable whereas signing him until age 31 would have meant a retirement contract lasting until age 38, which would have made retention levrrage more difficukt as no team wants to be paying a 38 year old a tenth of the salary cap.

Now if a 29 year old Gaudreau truly wants to play out East rather than here, chances are we were not a contender at that point and in that case we are better suited to trade him close to the TDL in his final year for a King's Ransom. So Be It.

IMO, it's that type of community policing that helps maintain a higher quality in a board. Otherwise you get a Don Cherry-esque community: Tonnes of bluster and bravado up front, preening when they get something right, and radio silence when they're wrong.
Since I was very vocal there wasn't a "Gio cap" I'll eat crow in this regard.

The contract came in under Giordano's money and Mackenzie has stated that the Flames didn't want to pay Johnny more than Giordano's 6.75m.

If the Gio Cap was "they don't want to pay him more than 6.75m", then I was completely wrong.

I was under the impression that a Gio Cap (much like the Alfie cap) was the idea that the Flames wouldn't let any player make more than Giordano out of respect or something silly like that. In that case, the jury is still out.

Great deal from the Flames perspective and Johnny is getting his pay as well, $6.75 isn't chump change. With his about face to just sign I really wonder what his agent was saying? I also hope the Flames laid out a plan for the rest of the money, sign a goalie, Bennett etc.

Just excited for hockey now.

Love this from Trelving:

"This isn't us saying a player isn't worth more, this is about having 23 mouths to feed and having enough food to go around the table" On why it was so important to stick to a lower AAV.

Pretty sure it was Sidney Blumenthal who first mentioned a Gio Cap.

Of course, it was Gaudreauvertime who sent investigators to the Saddledome to force Treliving to reveal the Gio cap. So really he did everyone a favour.

By the way, is there any player that is treated more like a child in the media than Gaudreau? Guys 23 years old. Had he not been a hockey player he'd probably be done his degree and been working for a year or been far along in a trade career already. Yet the media calls his parents asking for soundbites about their little boy that "just wants to play hockey". I can't recall any other players parents being so involved in the players public and media relations. Not faulting the parents. More so the media.

I think opinions should be debated and well defended. But if someone had a rationale argument that ended up being wrong what's the issue?
What type of message board with this be if posters weren't in some way accountable for the posts that they make?

How am I supposed to take someone seriously if they continually make wrong predictions and assertions without reflecting on their previous statements for accuracy?

The worst types of posters will be the worst offenders for this, if posters aren't going to reflect and absorb where they have been correct and incorrect, how is anyone going to improve as a poster?

Are we content as a community to have someone's loud-mouthed ignorance be equal to that of reserved and informed opinion? Is this calgaryflames.com or hfboards or is it a community with a higher standard?

Should I just take "where r u chris o'sullivan's" posts as being equal to Pierre Monster McGuire or Freeway or getbak?

In my opinion, why bother even having posts saved on the server if they aren't going to be reflected upon and used for historical context, why not just have every thread that falls off the main page automatically deleted?

This place would be a much better community if posters were more accountable to the posts they make. It's an effective way to populate your ignore list when you see the same ill-informed hysterics from the same ill-informed posters time after time.

I'm happy his parents are involved, oddly. The kid OD's on Nutella without guidance.

Didn't hear them say its not, then again didn't hear them say it was. I'd be surprised if it wasn't available somewhere.
Edit: Sureloss confirms in its own thread that 960 will have it.
