Your right. Just give McDavid 12 million instead of working for a reasonable contract..

I think these hockey players need to get a good finance guy on their negotiating team rather than just lawyers...
By my quick calculations (and simple assumptions) he'd need to earn 13mm in year 7 to do better with this deal (6x6.75) than he would've with a 7x7 agreement.
Still glad that Johnny is a long-term flame, but think a good numbers guy could've made us as fans, and Johnny as a player, happier with a longer deal.

I think it opens next year after making another top 6 acquisition and finding a reliable #4 D next offseason and shedding a few bad contracts.
This year is (fingers crossed, knock on wood) the return to playoff team status.

I wanted Gaudreau and Monahan for $14M combined, long-term and expiring on alternating years.
Brad managed the alternating years and got it down to $13.125 combined.
Thats a home-run anyway you slice it.
Monahan: $6.375
Gaudreau: $6.75
Sorry Sean, it was supposed to be the same but they lost that '3' somewhere. #Honestmistake.

Your arguememt is entirely based on the risk you assigned to each option and discounts the influence of two prime UFA years has on his 3rd contract. and you assume 7 X 7 was on the table.
Also when you have 40 million in your pocket money today may not be worth the lack of future flexibility tomorrow.

For you people saying 6 years is a long-time and a lot of things can change. Let me remind you:
The last time the Oilers made the playoffs was in the 2005-2006 season. Some things never change.

George Johnson on the deal coming together: https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/trel...rm/c-282544822
Quote:
The agreement helps avoid any distasteful public wrangling and injects a serious bit of mojo into Calgary's lineup.
Gaudreau is, as everyone is well aware, the young, fresh face of a franchise trying to re-define itself. Its undisputed poster boy. Responsible for 51 per cent of Flames' jersey sales.
And, most importantly, a whoopee-cushion of a winger, capable of ejecting people from their seats like the passage side of 007's Aston Martin's DB5.
Young players want to emulate him, their dads want his autograph, their moms want to mother him and their sisters want to marry him.
|
Quote:
"It's like a bowl of chicken wings, right? If there are 15 in the bowl, everyone wants one but some guy eats five, somebody starves.
"At the end of the day, players want to win. But in trying: 'I'm not trying to harm you or disrespect you, but it's got to work for both sides."
"You need a little meat left on those chicken bones to feed the others."
|
Looks like all the people who complained about Burke and Treliving going for dinner with the family were worried for nothing:
Quote:
The tide began to turn, according to Treliving, when he made a jaunt east for some face-to-face chat.
"I went out to New York and Philadelphia and met with the agent (Lewis Gross) one night and met with the family and Brian (Burke) came in, too.
"And we started to get momentum. Since then it's been all-day, every-day."

Question for CBA guru's. When does this current CBA expire? Could factor into Johnny signing a new contract if this deal expires after the CBA does

Wow...I am super, super late to this party. But let me first say congratulations to everyone! Congrats to Brad for getting an amazing deal. Congrats to Johnny for getting a long term contract with some big dollars playing on a team he loves and a city he is happy to be in. Congrats to the fans too! We finally get what we wanted! Gaudreau is locked up long term at a very reasonable, if not slightly cheap, cap hit for a player that will be a big part of this team in the playoffs.
I don't have a lot to say that hasn't already been said by others, but I am so freakin' happy about this. Not just for the implications for the Flames, but also this forum. It's been nearly impossible to have a reasonable discussion around here lately because of the moodiness, but maybe now we can all relax, be happy, and thoroughly enjoy the start of the season!
This is nothing but good news everyone. Rejoice!

After the 2022 season (September 15, 2022, to be exact), provided notice is given. Here's the full clause on the term.

In that Johnson article, I don't know why it drives me bananas, but it just does. There is a huge difference between being 51% of the jerseys sold, and being responsible for 51% of jerseys sold.
