For the people dissappointed that Treliving couldn't get him on a 7 or 8 year deal, I'm betting Gaudreau's camp was adamant on 6 years or less. That way, it leaves him open to get a monster deal when he turns UFA, and he'll still be in his prime years. Short term gain for 2 years could potentially mean he loses out long term if he's not able to get the UFA deal he's hoping for later on.
Edit: Just read some more tweets and comments on it. I'm still in the belief 6 years works out better for him. Either way, I'm stoked! Finally, we're able to put this behind us and get the season going!

As I have stated throughout the process 6 years was going to be a letdown for me. Would rather have given him the Tarasenko deal than the Gio contract. At the very least if he wants to stay here on his next deal having Gio's conteact expire at the same time will allow for the $10M per if needed
That also means we're re signing him 2 years younger. He's gonna go for term on that next contract so that will make it an easier pill to swallow.

THIS is why if your Brad Treliving, you use your leverage and stick to your guns in a negotiation of any type.
It allows cap flexibility moving forward to add a player or 2 later in the season(s) if they are a contender. And I dont mean just depth players but actual difference makers who are on the last year or two of their deal.
Great job by management to do what's right for the team and JG just became a very wealthy young man.
Win-win-win.

Thank freakin god! I would have liked 8 years but I am okay with 6. Under 7 is crazy good, gives us money for Bennett who looks like he is going to have a breakout year.
Honestly couldn't care less about the term. We'll cross the "should we have tried to get longer than 6 years" bridge in 5 years time. Lets worry about the here and now. Can't wait for the season to get started now.

Excellent deal all around. If Johnny is the player we all believe he is then he will get paid handsomely after this contract and that will be just fine.
Glad it's over.

Oilers suck.
This is a good day, now let the season begin! Thank you JG for signing this thing before the season started. The Gio cap is a bit silly. $7.25 for 8 years would have been better IMO. I still can't complain much about this.
