As I have stated throughout the process 6 years was going to be a letdown for me. Would rather have given him the Tarasenko deal than the Gio contract. At the very least if he wants to stay here on his next deal having Gio's conteact expire at the same time will allow for the $10M per if needed

Locked up for 5 years and if we can't extend him before the 6th year we trade him for a kings ransom.

News UpdateMcKenzie:
Gaudreau gets a $3M signing bonus now and also scheduled for $3.5M SB in potential lockout year (2020-21). But AAV on 6 yr deal is $6.75M.

In the end, this is probably the least sexy resolution.
6 years is a crud term, but 6.75 is a good cap. So...take the good, take the bad.

Yessssss!
Glad this is finally over and the Flames (and fans) can move on. Great AAV for a great player. Nice to know he'll be in the season opener, now go help the Flames burn down that new barn in Edmonton!

I like it.
At the end of the day, I expect years 4, 5 and 6 to be telling with regard to if he stays beyond that.
Hopefully we're cup contenders / winners and he signs a mega-payday to keep things going ala Kane / Toews in Chicago.
Sets up our core for the next six years. Woot!

I really thought that Brad was starting to lose his edge. He won this deal handily.
Hopefully everyone involved can put it past them and get this team to start winning some games now. The window opens in 2017-18, and it closes when Gio and Johnny's contracts are up.
Now, let's get to work on the Sam Bennett next contract thread and the Brian Elliot extension thread.

outstanding AAV. Term ... not such much. But hey, let's worry about it in 5 years. Glad it's over.

Just have to build a winning team now. I think the 'this will be his last Flames contract' people are worrying too much. Winning trumps everything for most of these guys, build a true contender and he will stay beyond six years.

So we have 6 years to win a cup otherwise Johnny leaves as a UFA? I can't imagine he would stay if we don't at least have 1 or 2 good runs into the playoffs.

In 6 years I'll be old so I don't have to worry about it anymore
