Yeah, I know. Do you believe the planners expected that 8 months later the city would have grown by 50K more people? I don't think many people did.

Thats the thing. 20 year plans can be made irrelevant pretty quickly by unexpected changes to the underlying projections. Before going ahead with plans that may now be flawed perhaps they should make sure the plan still has a chance to acheive it's goals.

Well I lived there for the first 16 years of my life. If it takes your friend 2 hours to get downtown they either live off the island, travel at off peak hours or are going the wrong way. That map is actually out dated as well. There are now more suburb commuter train lines as well as they are now taking the Metro north and south off the island to Laval and further into the south shore. The so called c-train expansion is a joke. They are doing nothing to increase ridership. They are adding stations to the end of the line so that people from okotoks and ardrie have to drive less far to get to the train.

That's usually why a twenty year plan such as this is broken down into smaller phases. Then if it becomes irrelevant they can make changes as it develops. Notice how in this particular plan the first phase involves a rapid transit route down the two new lines to get people used to the idea of taking that route. Then a few years later they start putting C-train lines in. I fully expect to see adjustments made during the course of the plan (there have even been some preliminary changes already) but the main idea will remain the same; fix the transit problem.

That sounds real nice and everything but considering the massive infrastructure debt that has been accrued while the Conservative Government was so damned intent on paying off the financial debt it is not surprising that people are complaining. The provincial government paid off Alberta's debt 23 years ahead of schedule at the cost of maintaining and upgrading infrastructure so that's why we're all in this mess.

Huh...that seems a bit strange as it takes me 15 minutes by car to do about the same distance...instead if bussing downtown I'd be tempted to take the 417 (although it does stop a bit before gametime for a Flames game).

I'd almost think you could walk that in 45 minutes. We walk to games all the time from 8th and 19th in about 20 minutes.

Agreed, but being debt free doesn't suck at all ... I'll trade in some commute time to be debt free. In fact it made me buy city center real estate.

Does anyone know if the city has looked at burying the C train along 7th ave?

Burying the LRT has long been planned under 8th Ave. Cost is the prohibative factor.

Wow, that's a cool look at the C-Train map... seems like nothing much has changed since I left Calgary in '97... back then Whitehorn was also the last stop on one side, Brentwood on the other and Anderson down south. From what I can tell, they've only extended the southern stops by two.

By four actually (south) and the NW by one, and almost done the NE by one, but you are right, not a whole lot, We need more legs or a loop or something. Wouldn't hurt to start using the downtown tunnels either.

Considering the C-Train is one of the most used systems in NA (by capita and by riders) by far you'd think they invest some more money in it. Granted most mass transit systems are a losing proposition up front, but they save costs and problems overall and improve way of life.
