I usually try not to pile on the Oilers needlessly but god damn the things they do are so ####ing terrible it's like watching a decade long blooper reel.
That's the thing about 2012. Even if it's acknowledged that Yakupov was an awful pick, if you go back to that day who would you select instead? Ryan Murray I guess, but he hasn't been lights out amazing. Certainly would have been a million times better than Yakupov in retrospect but no slam dunk alternative selection there.
If I could have any player today from the 2012 draft class it would be Shayne Gostisbehere (3rd round, 78th overall), followed by Filip Forsbeg (11th overall - I still cant believe how badly the Caps got fleeced in that trade). 2012 draft might be the worst draft class in modern NHL history.

Honestly the Oilers need to take away the trading rights on Chia's computer account.
The Reinhart trade was breathtakingly bad
The Hall for Larsson trade isn't a great trade value wise.
Now Yak for a conditional third and a prospect that is so far from the NHL that he's already practicing his "I was a NHL prospect, at his local beer league game"
The only thing he's done well is draft first overall and pick McMenis, which frankly I could have done for a 1/4 of the salary.
Make no mistake, this team looks to be worse then last year especially offensively.

I don't blame Chia pet for this trade as he inherited the player and it's pretty clear there wasn't a market for him and the coaching staff didn't want to play him anymore as I imagine he would have been placed on waivers had they found no trade suitors. He's a bust and quite honestly that draft was a bust in general as there's not many teams that made out well in that first round.

This makes my day more than most... Flashback to January 2013 when I wasn't exactly loved in Edmonton. Not my attention as I wrote this article for THW:
What if?
The Case For Trading Nail Yakupov:http://thehockeywriters.com/the-case...-nail-yakupov/
Edmonton Journal's Dave Staples wrote a rebuttal in the paper (the online version wasn't quite as a homer post as the print copy which a friend got for me where he really tried to torch me): Trade Nail Yakupov? Not if you want to win a Stanley Cup. http://edmontonjournal.com/sports/ho...-a-stanley-cup

Such a gem of an article. In particular:
Quote:
4. The Oilers don’t have any glaring needs.
With Schultz, Ladi Smid and Jeff Petry, the Oilers have three outstanding-to-solid young d-men to build around, so the notion of trading for expensive Dion Phaneuf or less proven Jake Gardiner isn’t enticing. In Montreal, P.K. Subban is going to have a large price tag, too, and I know this will mark me as an Oilers fan, but I don’t love Subban’s game more than Petry’s game...

you are right, not sure how on Earth we can replace a combined 35 goals from Hall and Yakupov...oh right, Lucic, Versteeg, a healthy McDavid should do it
and people are crapping on Chiarelli like he's dismantling a winning team....

Did you seriously mention bottom-of-the-barrel PTO Kris Versteeg as a possible offensive replacement for two first-overall picks? Granted, one of them looks to be a potential bust, but still... that's ridiculous.

you do know Versteeg almost had twice as many goals as Yakupov did last year right?
