Johnny is probably being advised to stay home until he's signed. There would be HUGE pressure on him socially to sign if he was in Calgary.

It's from a tv show. I don't remember the name of it, but the red headed gay guy from Modern Family was on it before Modern Family. It wasn't very good and was cancelled relatively quickly.
EDIT. This was it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0484082/

The Debbie Downer in me can't help bu think that if both sides expected an imminent deal, then they would have just told JG to pack his things and get to Calgary so that they could do the presser and get him dressed for practice ASAP.
The fact they are doing it in Johnny's court isn't necessarily a bad thing. They have to negotiate somewhere, but if it was in Calgary, that would be a good sign IMO. As long as it's not because the JG side said they are going to the KHL or demanding a trade, so Brad had to rush over there to talk to him in person. That last part is just me being a Francis though.

Just to clarify for my information. If Johnny doesn't agree to a contract no other team can try to sign him indefinitely? And the only other option other than signing with the Flames is for the Flames to trade him? So he could potentially sit for years?

He'd just practice with a no-contract jersey on

Correct.
He needs another professional season playing hockey before he can receive an offer sheet.
Gaudreau can negotiate exclusively with the Flames. Should he choose not to sign he will have to wait until he is 27 for his UFA status to kick in before negotiating with other teams on the open market.
That's how I understand it.

These types of things are normal and it could just as easily be argued that brad told Johnny and a his agent that he will fly out to discuss things out of good will rather than have Johnny fly all the way back to Calgary only to be told the flames aren't moving on their offer. I would look at it differently if Johnny flew out to Calgary when he doesn't have to, and would show his hand a little as far as how seriously the flames should consider the threat of him holding out past the start of the season.

The more I think about it the more it makes sense for Tre to go there. There's no way that Gross and Johnny are both at the negotiating table for the most part. Agents don't want the player to actually see the negotiation, IMO. There's too much of a relationship between a GM and a player and it could skew things. But he needs Johnny to be close so that he can sign assuming the deal is made.

Can someone clarify. I'll start by saying I think it is highly unlikely he sits but for arguements sake lets say he did. Would sitting a year count as a pro season even if he doesn't play? As far as I understand he needs 3 pro seasons before he could be offer sheeted. So would sitting one season count and he could be offer sheeted next year or would he actually have to play?

He'd have to play. Missing the entire season would change nothing.

I really thought today was going to be the day. I wonder if maybe a deal got done and they are just waiting to announce tomorrow? And then Johnny plays tomorrow night? And we all live happily ever after.
I don't want Treliving to leave NY without a signed contract.

It was from a short lived sitcom, "The Class" from about a decade ago. It starred Lizzy Caplan & Jon Bernthal, it is a shame it never lasted longer.

Treliving didn't fly to New York so they could continue to stare at each other in a silent stalemate.
This will get done in the next few days, so let's all remain calm here..

Would it be fun to speculate what Johnny would fetch in a trade or am I just looking to get punched in the face?
