I wonder if there still exists an Iginla cap... No player can make more per season than Jarome Iginla did unless the player has proven to surpass Iginla's importance to the club. Johnny Gaudreau hasn't proven that yet.
That is why Treliving has gone to New York, with an owner, city councillor and a Member of Parliament, to negotiate with Gaudreau's agent.

I'm going to punish myself and assume this means he's on his way over to make a last ditch attempt at a reasonable long term deal but will come home having signed a 2 year bridge deal.

I think reading anything from Eric Francis is enough punishment.

I do believe that this gets resolved by shortening the term. Which ain't great.
If it's a 6 year deal and the money is over $7per or even high sixes, that is a win for the Gaudreau camp and a negative for the Flames.

Doesn't matter how much or how long this contract is, the next deal will be a lot more tougher...
I say if this deal is less than $7mil per and is shorter than 5 years, this will be Gaudreau's last contract with Calgary.

I could see Treliving flying out and coming back with Johnny as well as they hammer out a deal on this trip. Really hoping for 8 years but would be happy with 7. 6 years will be disappointing.

I like the responses from GG in that TSN interview. Focused on who is here, let the business side take care of itself. Until then he's focused on the PK and PP.
I like that much better than a coach who is pressuring his GM to get the player signed at whatever long term consequence for the immediate benefit.

Has a coach ever done that?

This is actually not possible.
The flames are at least at the gio cap and Johnny is at 8 so the most they are apart is 1.25 million.
Of course there could be other iterations then the 8 year option.
