Al Morganti was just on with Erik Duhatschek on the FAN960's East/West Hotstove talking about Gaudreau and his contract. Did anyone catch it?
He said he doesn't see JG missing any games. He also doesn't see an 8 year contract. (was asked directly if he thought it would be 8 years. said no) Then my work phone rang.

Gaudreau will want his contract up at the same time as Monahan or earlier for maximum leverage.
7 is fine by me. Johnny can give us the best years of his career, and then we can trade him to the Flyers/Devils/Bruins at the trade deadline just as he starts his descent, and everyone is happy.

I'm not sure he will descend at 30. But at least we'd be trading him while he still has high value instead of waiting until long past the best before date like with Iginla.
From what he Morganti knows of Gaudreau and his family, he thinks he sincerely wants to be in Calgary. He doesn't see him signing an 8 year contract, as that would take him to 31, where he may not have as much leverage vs. if he's 29.
He also thinks the contract will be $7-$7.5M.

I think the Flames know there is a good chance this is his last contract with Calgary. I'd be shocked if they didn't use leverage to get minimum 7 year term.

Considering most players these days seem to have their point production while in their mid 20s, I definitely think he will have tailed off by 30... at least on the score sheet.
Luckily for him, his greatest asset is his creativity, so that should keep him around in the league for a while....assuming his wrists can withstand the years of pummelling.
