Or we score even more goals because our good players are spending more time with the puck instead of chasing the game on defense

Nope, since you joined you're got the 5th most posts of anyone, and there's a pretty good drop off after you.

And the posters ahead of you post in far more diverse threads than you do, generally posting in 10 times as many different threads.

Goal affects? Selling out defence for offence? High risk plays?

Lol nice ninja edit. To answer the original question, you have 3 guesses and the first two don't count.

EDIT: And I should clarify I'm only counting the FoI forum.

Is it ever the case that good teams sacrifice offense for the sake of defense? The Blackhawks don't. The Capitals don't. The Penguins don't. Maybe the Kings do, but only because Sutter built a HOF career out of his ability to play that kind of system to perfection. (If only he had the same kind of aptitude as a GM...)

I don't mean to compare the Flames to those teams or insinuate that Gulutzan is on the same level as guys like Quenneville or Trotz, but this seems like a fairly ignorant claim to me. There's no evidence for that yet.

Or a better neutral zone / defensive system enables us to get the puck out of our end and into theirs quicker, thus more offense?

I have no idea what our true systems are intended to be, but I thought I saw one plan was to step up on 3 on 2s, to stop them as 2 on 2s before they become 3 on 2s, thus, in theory, turning the puck over quicker. The opposition will then caught behind the turnover, giving us a 3 on 2, again in theory, and giving us more offense.

No no, don't change my words...

I said he's worried about his WANTS, not his NEEDS. Needs involve things like survival, putting food on the table, providing for family, that kind of stuff.

He's at the wants stage, as in, "I want to be able to provide for the next 5 generations..."

The fact that he can earn all this money is great, but we aren't talking about a 50k paycheque vs a 7M paycheque... we are talking about 7M vs 8M. There isn't a single one of us who either IS or COULD BE reading (pick your person) this that will be able to justify a NEED for the extra million dollars a year.

NOTE: I'm not trying to change the discussion point, rather let's stay back where my original post was. We can ride with Bennett on the top line and without Gaudreau for a while... if he's busy worrying about his wants instead of the team.

I like this idealistic world where the Flames can simply say "Hey lets play with a better defensive structure/mentality" and it has no effect on the offense.

It's like Magic. How ever did Hartley not think to just try that!?

It's been shown often that offense and defense are actually quite independent of each other.

Not when your forwards are too small to drive a possession based, cycle game and thus you need to rely on your defense jumping into odd man rushes on the regular in order to generate any momentum. The Flames can't possibly keep the same offensive strategy they had last year if they want to be tighter on defense.

I don't see Brouwer fixing the size issue on his own and not having your best playmaker on the team is definitely not going to help that.

Yeah, big pity we didn't have the big strong forwards like Nikita Kucherov, Tyler Johnson, Jonathan Drouin, and Ondrej Palat required to play a ""possession"" game.

Notice all of those forwards are a lot better than anyone on the Flames besides Gaudreau and Monahan?

I like this idealistic world where you aren't a dick, but that would take some crazy amount of magic.

My point was that a change in system to a better neutral/defensive structure will not necessarily result in a decrease in offense.

Perhaps Bob felt a run and gun offensive style (long, breakout pass) best suited his team, and perhaps Gully feels differently, and is able to implement such a system that forces turnovers earlier, thus resulting in more offense. It may result in missing the forced turnover sometimes, but perhaps having goaltenders that can stop more than 90% of the shots they face will leave him comfortable with the cost-benefit associated therewith.

Didn't we complain that Bob's defensive structure was to simply collapse and try to block shots? That was wholly unsuccessful, and I think we would likely all agree that any structure that actually forces turnovers instead of passively blocking shots should actually result in less time in our zone, thus necessarily resulting in more time in the offensive zone. Hence, a better neutral / defensive zone structure that not only does not hinder offense, but actually helps it.

I notice how Gaudreau is better than all but one of those forwards (the one who was hurt all year and scored less actual points than Joe Colborne) and Bennett is better and played more games than Drouin, and Backlund and Frolik have no difficulty generating an offensive zone cycle, etc.
