Kane got 7.75M per (adjusted for inflation) on a 5 year deal with 4 RFA years and only 1 UFA year. He was coming off the same type of season we just saw from Gaudreau, but while playing on a loaded Hawks team.

Probably not many since it's an oddity that we burned that first year of ELC with only 1 game but it didn't count as a year towards UFA.

Most comparable that comes to mind is Crosby's 5x$8.7M after his ELC (4 RFA years).

OV got 13x$9.5M after his ELC (4 RFA years).

So ya, no one really and the closest is freaking Crosby.

It was no different when Iginla was the star of the team. Some fans cheer for the name on the back of the jersey more than the crest on the front.

You aren't adjusting for inflation.

That Crosby deal isn't too bad actually when you think about it.

Didn't Kane also win a cup?

How do you feel about his poor performance on the road. Should he get elite dollars when he's only an elite player half the time?

Was for $8.7 million a season under a $58.6 million cap.
BTW - $8.7 million a season under a $58.6 million cap is the equivalent of a $10.84 million deal under the current $73 million cap. Obviously, Johnny isn't getting that if he's asking for 8, but Malkin's deal is the closest comparable I could find.

I wonder if in hindsight Johnny came away worse burning that first year of ELC.

Sure it got him to his 2nd contract faster, but he'd probably be looking at a much bigger 2nd contract with 3 stud years under his belt, offer sheet leverage and only 4 RFA years holding the AAV back.

Poor performance or poor results? He created just as many scoring chances on the road, just had poor shooting percentage on the road and great shooting percentage at home.

Oh, semantics. Kane did win a cup. He literally won the Stanley Cup for his team with the winning goal. And Kane's no Dave Bolland.

So Malkin's deal was all RFA years and he still got effectively 10.8M? Holy jumpin

Lewis, stop posting on internet forums and get back to working on reasonable deals.

"Geno was coming off a 112-point season (Stanley Cup, Art Ross, Conn Smythe, etc...)"

funny how you can miss, (or choose to ignore) such important details...

I'm not saying he wasn't a big part of that cup run, but it's hard to objectively value team success. If Kane was drafted by Arizona he probably has no cups and is still an elite player.

It's a results business man. He didn't produce at an elite level on the road.

Kane was also 21 years old and had 3 seasons of 72 70 and 88 points. Gaudreau is not Patrick Kane. He's a damp good player but he's a notch below Kane.

We can speculate and hypothesize all we want, but contracts, like most business decisions, are based on facts, not make-believe. The facts are that Kane scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in the Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. The facts are that Kane scored 28 points in 22 games in the playoffs that year. The facts are that Kane was drafted by Chicago. If you want to use hypotheticals to determine potential contract values, then you're doing it wrong.

Some Flames fans are bizarre though. Over the years there have been various factions who couldn't wait to get Vernon, Nieuwendyk, Gilmour, Mullen, and Iginla out of town.
