They're testing Trump supporters to see how much they'll take before bailing. It's hilarious and sad to watch Giuliani and others give up their remaining dignity.
The hat.

Yup, he was definitely on Xanax before. The GOP needs to crush some up and slip it in everything he drinks and maybe he can not seem crazy.

Ideological certification for immigrants. I guess Trump will be suppressing the freedom of thought, expression and religion.

They played the Rolling Stones classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want" before the speech and again as he wrapped it up.
I know the next line is "but if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need", but that seems like an odd message.

It really does feel like he's trolling his own supporters at this point. His entire candidacy has been one of the most fascinating things I've ever watched. Its some Andy Warhol/Frank Miller ####.

Its funny. I actually believe that, in principle, illegal immigration is a huge problem. I'm rather hawkish in that respect.
But of course I din't believe in the mass deportation of people who have lived in the United States for years (and especially those who have children who are US citizens).
My proposed solution would focus on legalizing current illegal immigrants in some reasonable process and improving capacity to accept more legal immigrants (more resources for processing applications, less restrictions, etc).

I would guess that would be a message to the immigrants or would be immigrants.
I find it interesting that he continues to play songs from bands that always result in a "please stop playing our songs at your rallies, we hate you" letter. You'd think someone would realize that it is not really a great idea to point out that these bands (who count millions of potential voters as their fans) hate him.
I've got bits and pieces of his speech, and he is going all in on the wall again. Promising a wall that will be impenetrable from underground and in the air. And he's back to proclaiming the Mexicans will pay for it just minutes after their president said they will never pay for it. At some point, someone has got to hold him accountable for explaining how he is going to get Mexico to pay for this multi billion dollar sci fi wall. Can he really answer that question in the debate with "BELIEVE ME, THEY WILL PAY FOR IT!!" over and over?

Maybe Trump means that there will be a user fee for the wall. Every time someone from Mexico climbs over it or digs under it to get to the US, they will charge them $10 or something and give them a hand stamp for free re-entry.

Trump is right about one thing in this election: journalism sucks. Obviously this was filled at 7pm tonight and not after the actual speech, but here's the start of the New York Times lead on Trump tomorrow.

So a few things here
1. He's going to be tough on ISIS and illegal immigration, and stare down world leaders as the toughest negotiator in human history...but is scared to face a black church without the whole thing being scripted. Ok then
2. Why is the pastor participating in this sham? Does he not see he's being used by Trump to not actually interact with black people, but once again try and ease the fears among college whites that he's a racist? The pastor has everything to lose and nothing to gain here. Or is he, like many others, desperate to suck on the Trump tit to raise his own profile?
Quote:
Donald J. Trump’s visit to a black church here on Saturday will be a major moment for a candidate with a history of offending the sensibilities of black Americans.
His team is leaving nothing to chance.
Instead of speaking to the congregation at Great Faith Ministries International, Mr. Trump will be interviewed by its pastor in a session that will be closed to the public and news media, with questions submitted in advance. And instead of letting Mr. Trump be his freewheeling self, his campaign has prepared lengthy answers for the submitted questions, consulting black Republicans to make sure he says the right things.
An eight-page draft script obtained by The New York Times shows 12 questions that Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, the church’s pastor, intends to ask Mr. Trump during the taped question-and-answer session, as well as the responses Mr. Trump is being advised to give.
The proposed answers were devised by aides working for the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee, according to an official who has been involved in the planning but declined to be identified while speaking about confidential strategy.
|
Quote:
It is not uncommon for a candidate to request interview questions in advance; aides to Hillary Clinton do it from time to time. But it is unusual for a campaign to go so far as to prepare a script for a candidate’s own responses, and highlights the sensitivity of Mr. Trump’s first appearance at a black church. Mr. Trump’s series of slights, including his questioning of President Obama’s birth certificate, has not endeared him to black voters.
The interview will be aired about a week later on the Impact Network, Bishop Jackson’s Christian cable television channel. The official said several Trump aides would be working with the network to edit the taped interview so that the final version reflected the campaign’s wishes.
The arrangement have angered several black Republicans who had been urging that Mr. Trump, who is widely seen as distant from the black community, speak for at least 10 minutes at the service, according to the official involved in the planning. The official said the Trump campaign was uncomfortable with the candidate speaking before the congregation and insisted instead on the private interview.

Phrases like "to make sure he says the right things" are what terrify me about politics.
Shouldn't we be finding the people who say the right things because they actually feel that way?

I'm not sure why that's even still going ahead. If I were the pastor, my attitude would be, what's the point? If you're just regurgitating answers that someone else prepared for you, why do I care what a team of campaign staffers thinks?

Because it's broadcast on his cable channel. He is getting the biggest celebrity in America right now to appear on his TV channel for free.
Seems like a wise business decision.
