The next 4 spots, including the most probable ones, are between:
1. Wideman
2. Russell (if he comes back)
3. Jokipakka
4. Engelland
5. Wotherspoon
6. Kulak (a stretch but probably best chance of Culkin, Kylington)
6 guys if we include Russell and Kulak to choose from (5 if we leave Russell out).
I think it's a stretch to say anyone would be better than Russell (or Wideman for that matter). None of the kids have enough NHL experience yet (including Kulak) for management to be confident in to develop while playing against NHLers (this includes 4th like NHLers with more experience than them).
Maybe not the trainers then but the Flames overall:
“I note that Mr. Wideman gave a post-game interview in which he essentially denied having been ‘woozy.’ Mr. Wideman testified at the hearing that he had been instructed to give a misleading answer if asked about his condition and that he followed that instruction.”

The entrie situation is just weird
Not that weird, players have been denying they have concussions for decades. New concussion protocols won't stop a player from lying because they don't want to miss time, especially a player that has been around as long as Wideman who came up in an era where players were praised for playing injured. That mentality doesn't simply turn off.

Wow I don't remember that quote since I had really stopped caring about the situation. But he's saying the Flames told him to lie about it. I guess teams have been telling players to lie to the media about injuries since the dawn of time but with the focus on concussions, Flames are rather lucky this part of the story didn't blow up on them.

This is exactly why using anything said to the media should not be able to be used as evidence too.

Treliving has tried to unload this guy hard for over a year now and there simply hasn't been any takers for that contract. Unfortunately it appears he's going to be a Flames until the trade deadline. If he's the reason the team can't sign Russell I'm actually okay with this because I would rather put up with a season of Wideman than multiple seasons of Russell.

To add to that, what team wants the drama he brings outside the rink for $5 million? The cloud from last year shows no signs of going ayway anytime soon and its likely his on ice performance isn't going to improve, contract year or not. I can see him spending a lot of time in the press box this year, as ridiculous as that seems from a cost perspective. I see Wotherspoon/Engelland working the majority of the season as the bottom pairing.

Agree with the point about "evidence" I suppose from a legal perspective, but I don't have an issue with teams and players being accountable for what they state publicly. The tradition of lying about injuries is archaic IMO. With all the attention on concussions and CTE, some transparency would help the league, not hurt it.
I don't think I want Russell on the team, even for 800k as a number six. We need defenders that can grow with the team, and Russell is done growing. Wotherspoon, Kulak, Kylington, Andersson, someone should be put in that role to grow.
I feel the same way. I'm in this to win games. Not to fit mediocre players on the team because they have good cap hits. When Russell yet again coughs up the puck in the D zone because he couldn't get it out and the other team scores I'm not going to care about his cap hit and brush it off. I care about on ice performance and Russell's time has passed.
And this is coming from someone who was a huge Russellmania fan his entire time here.
At this point Russell might have to sign a PTO to get on a roster.
No, no, no! That's not how it works. Players who aren't good enough to get contracts get PTO's , not players who go late into the summer without signing a contract. Why is this myth so accepted by hockey fans?
Jiri Hudler literally just signed a $2mil contract after so much discussion about how he wouldn't find a home and may have to take league minimum or sign a PTO.
So glad we actually have a goalie in net this season.
I get ticked off watching clips like that.
It was so obvious even from even November last year that the goalies were not getting it done. I do not know why there wasn't more movement to bring in a goalie instead of wasting the year.
