In this week's SI: Johnny Gaudreau talks eating habits with @jaf78, poses in front of his open fridge, holding a bowl of fruit. Enjoy.

...Players that produce like Johnny Gaudreau are scarce in today's NHL and their value on the open market reflects that. If Treliving feels like Gaudreau's market value is higher than the value he provides to this team, he should recognize the opportunity to arbitrage and move him to a team who values him more - the bounty on a guy like Johnny would be significant. Like Hall +, Mackinnon +, Marner + Nylander etc.
This is preposterous.

I've figured out why this contract is taking so long: Brad is making Johnny eat a gigantic bucket of fruits and vegetables before he's allowed to sign.

Everyone is taking an issue with at least some aspect of every argument you're making. Are you just going to keep arguing it? Because it doesn't seem like you're going to convince anyone at this point of... well... whatever it is you're still trying to convince everyone of.
Johnny is great? Yes.
If that's it, you probably would've saved yourself the novella you've written thus far if you had just said that and that alone, without comparing him to all-time greats, dismissing other players, and insisting on your prediction of contract payout.
I legitimately have no idea what your argument is at this point except being against anything that isn't 100% unconditional praise of Gaudreau.
My point is that Gaudreau is getting severely undervalued by some here just because he's a small skilled winger. People claim he brings nothing else but offense, which is a gross mischaracterization of his overall game. Yes, centers have typically been hugely important to cup champions, but if you look at the last 3 cup winners, you had Kessel getting the Pens over the hump (robbed of Conn Smythe) and then Kane and Williams. Very easily could have been 3 straight wingers win the Conn Smythe.
Monahan is becoming a good faceoff man and is great around the net, but he still has a ways to go in terms of 2 way play, physicality, leadership etc. Meanwhile, Gaudreau has won at every level, was easily our best player in the playoffs in 2015, is super mega clutch, and just finished 6th in league scoring. He puts up points regardless of linemates, and increases the production of everyone when he's on the ice. Only Backlund and Brodie had a better +/- this past year, and he's easily our best winger on the breakout. He's widely regarded as the best 3v3 player on the planet. And he's flat out the most dangerous and exciting player on the ice whenever he hops over the boards.
All at 23 years of age and 5 more years as an RFA.
I don't know what else he can to do to earn the respect of some - how is it even a debate that he's our most valuable player?

In the first place, Gaudreau is NOT being "severely undervalued" by anyone. I think it is fair to say that every poster in this thread has projected his contract to land somewhere in the range of recent RFA deals signed by Filip Forsberg on the low end and Vladmir Tarasenko on the high end. He might end up earning a little more than Tarasenko on a long-term deal (I personally doubt it), but it will certainly be close. Second, No one is disputing figures in the $8–9 m range because Gaudreau is a "small skilled winger." They are doing so because he is a Restricted Free Agent with no arbitration rights. His current contract status factors demonstrably into what his next contract will pay, and that is within the range I have suggested. Third, In the past twenty years there have only been TWO wingers to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, and I emphatically contest the notion that Kessel was a clear favourite for the award who was "robbed" this past Spring.

Look. Everyone here would agree that Gaudreau is one of the Flames best players, and perhaps even the best of the lot. But what is most exasperating in this thread is not our collective failure to elevate our opinion of him to your level as one of the all-time greats, but rather your utter refusal to acknowledge that there are other players on the team who are in the MVP conversation. It is not in any way disrespectful to recognise that while Gaudreau is a sensational talent, he is not such a spectacular player as to make everyone else on the roster dispensable.

We're not talking prime Ovechkin. Ovechkin today plays on a loaded caps team and relies a ton on the PP. Gaudreau outscored him by 10% this past season.
Ovechkin is the best player on a loaded caps team. Gaudreau is most likely the best forward on a rebuilding team. Ovechkin was a beast in the playoffs, one of the only players to show up. He's physical, he's a leader... He's got the advantage of a decade more experience. Gaudreau is still learning his game, his game is still immature and unrefined. Ovechkin today is still much better than Gaudreau is today.
You sure like posting about anything and everything though.
Yeah because this is a discussion forum. Posts like yours don't foster quality conversations; instead, they reduce discussion by putting off-topic materials into these threads.
Just putting this out there as a general plea: if you don't like my posting habits, rather than throwing threads off-course, just put me on ignore or send me a PM. It makes me feel better because I don't have to sift through posts like this to get to the on-topic discussions, and you will feel better too since you won't have to read my posts.
Thanks.

Whiskeythedevil Gaudreauvertime is pretty homerific with the way he pumps Gaudreau's tires. But man, you've brought it to a whole new level now that you are on CP. Wow. It's pretty telling when you are literally the only person on this site pumping him up like this. You even said something asinine on HF like Gaudreau had the best vision of any player in the NHL over the last 15 years. Common man.
I'll give you credit. You love the guy and love to make it known. And now you've got this whole thread trying to dial back the Gaudreau hype. Impressive, considering how much we as Flames' fans value him. But wow. Not even actual Flames fans overrate him the way you do. Nobody is undervaluing here because he is small. Quite the opposite. But you are overrating him to the point of putting him on the same pedestal as players like OV, Malkin, Fleury and Iginla. That's just crazy.

Ekblad and Tarasenko both got 7.5M AAVs with less proven than Gaudreau. I don't even know how you can say Forsberg is a floor, the floor should be Forsberg + 10%, ceiling Tarasenko +10%, so that's between 7M and 8M on a 7 year deal.
Also - go back through this thread, there are many people discounting the value of Gaudreau because he's (1) small and (2) a winger.

Recognition of Gaudreau's ability doesn't imply that anyone is dispensable, and I never said anything remotely to that effect. Brodie is a great example, I could see arguments for him being the most valuable player on this team (but not asset). I don't see an argument for anyone else at this point. Just being honest.
