We forget that Monahan is two years younger then Gaudreau and IMO has more in-game growth left.
No disrespect to the winger but the big two-way center who already has a letter on his chest isn't significantly less valuable to this team then anyone.

When it comes to risk management 6x$6.75M >>> 8x$8.5M.
I'd way rather be wrong and have him be a stud and miss out on two cheap years than be wrong and overpay for something that doesn't pan out for that price. 6 years is a long long time.

I don't know if Monahan has more room for growth than Gaudreau, as one has more or less plateaued offensively over the past 2 years. Monahan's growth could come in his 2 way play, because as of today, he's not really a great 2 way player.

Well of course. If he signs 6x6.75 vs 8x8.5 you save 10.5 over the 6 year term.
Even if his next contract is 13 million per, you still save money over the next 8 years.

Disagree with the idea that Monahan has plateaued offensively. Think he has several 35-40 goal seasons in him.
The talking point from the corsi guys is that Monahan is bad defensively and while the 21 (twenty one!) year old obviously has room to improve there his numbers will improve when he isn't being pulled down by Kris Russell or the goaltending of Ramo and Hillier.

Over the last two years, Monahan has certainly plateaued offensively. Also, not sure how the goaltending effected Monahan's Corsi numbers. . .

Let's put it this way. Say that you were representative of Johnny's camp, with CP in the role of Flames camp. If the relevant exchange in this thread is anything close to the actual negotiations going on, then we should be expecting 6 x 6. 375 any day now!

You don't know what plateau means.

Seems confused by "significant" as well. Gaudreau scored all of three more goals than Monahan last year, how that puts him on an entire different level of significance is beyond me.

It's not to say he can't improve, but his season totals year over year haven't improved like Johnny's have. Hence the word "plateaued" - to reach a state of little or no change after a time of activity or progress.
That doesn't fit Monahan's offensive production over the last 2 seasons?

It's a premature word to use when talking about players who've played two or three seasons only IMO. Wildly premature, like you're not even in the bedroom yet.

Well considering he's a playmaker first, and Monahan is the primary beneficiary of that playmaking, it's pretty significant that Gaudreau scored more goals than him. Not to mention 15 more points, all in 2 less games.
That's certainly a different level to me. Not sure how that's even debatable.

Like I said, it doesn't mean that he can't show improvement from here, but over the past 2 years, he hasn't shown much improvement in his production. Which is potentially an indicator of less room for improvement, especially when compared to Johnny, who has shown improvement every year.

Gaudreau has played 2 seasons... "every year". Monahan showed just as much improvement if not more in his second season over his first.

Gaudreau may begin to plateau as well, but he hasn't to this point, and is a couple years older.
Realistically, I don't see Monahan as being much more than a 60-70 point player, who should become better in the defensive end. Gaudreau could end up being a 90-100 point guy and I wouldn't be shocked in the least. That's the type of player we're talking about here, IMO.
