How do you watch Flames games? I find SD Flames games pretty much unwatchable now.

SN is doing its best to carry that tradition into the HD era, the 4K era, and beyond.

I have HD, but it's a pretty lousy LCD.

I just find it to be a slippery slope. If I make the switch to BluRay, I'll have someone tell me that to get the best out of it, I need LED and surround sound. Then by the time I update that, something better will come along. I have just given up and until something breaks, I'm done updating stuff. I tend to either be a perfectionist or minimalist, and I know once I start upgrading again, I won't stop. Just not worth it to me any more. My brother in-law is a good example of this. He bought a bigger TV, then read that his couch should be a certain distance from the TV for best results, so he ended up replacing his couch for a better fit in the room. It's just too much pressure. I just want to sit on the chesterfield and watch my programs without thinking about it.

I do find it funny though when you get a DVD that tries to show you how awesome BluRay quality is. They make it look so good, but then I think, I am watching this on a DVD. So is BluRay really better by default, or did they just nerf DVD quality in order to make BluRays look better in comparison? It's a damn conspiracy I tell you!

Captchas are now being used to actually transcribe old texts which have been worn down and the words arent completely legible. By having thousands of people do the guess work for you, organizations are able to recover text without having to employ people to do it. Pretty neat.

Yeah but if everyone gets them wrong then no progress will be made. So what's the point?

That was great when that's what they were doing, now it seems like all the Captchas I see are those ones with 9 photos and you have to pick the 2-4 that have some particular item in them.

Those ones can be pretty annoying, especially when all the images are of similar things and you have to figure out what exactly is in each one. I've seen one where all the photos were of food items and you had to pick the ones with a picture of pie in them, but the photos are so small (especially on a phone), that you couldn't really tell if some of them were pies, cakes, or cookies. So, annoying.

I think the new Castle Provincial Park will have a positive impact on tourism in the area, it's got a lot going for it:

- Beautiful scenery
- Within 2.5-3 hour drive from the city
- Arguably the best skiing in Alberta at Castle Mountain nearby
- Very cheap real estate

See, now you are machine learning for some company. They throw out these images and have the users identify all the ones with pies in them. Once several users all say "this picture is a pie" then the machine uses that as a base image for pies, and tries to compare other photos that might be pies. Theoretically, they can teach the computer what a pie looks like this way. And now I want pie. thanks.

This is my issue right here. If you're good with that stuff, it's easier. But what if you're not very tech-inclined? I'd wager your average 30/40-something isn't as tech-savvy as your average CP'er.

I've always kinda struggled with that stuff. I never figured out how to unblock U.S. Netflix, etc. I used to be able to torrent ok here & there, but something changed in the last year or two making it a lot more difficult, I can't figure it out anymore. It's annoying.

I'd happily take a video store back if it meant losing the odd sneaky advance in this area. The "online only" thing isn't as easy as many make it out to be, at least if you don't know where to start.

Not that I liked doing this per say, but it used to be legal to ride in the back of a pickup truck? A quick search now reveals that it has to be 'the nature of your job' such as horticultural in Alberta.

Always thought it was funny when it was fully legal.

I miss video stores for nostalgic reasons, but beyond that they're of very little use to me. That being said, that there's no real way to rent a video game is perplexing. How can there not be a market for that?

Sucks, but that's what happens when you have perennial trees that bloomed early due to a mild winter

Whatever happened to the days where people would actually enjoy a concert? Now it's just a bunch of mindless zombies who sit there filming the whole show. Watch any concert from before the time of smart phones, say 2008 and earlier. Nobody is filming, everybody is jumping around, singing along, moshing, crowd surfing, all that fun stuff. The genre didn't matter. Those days are gone now. I find the punk/metal/rock scene to still be pretty good, but I went to my first rap concert in years in July and it was super boring. Just a bunch of drones filming the show. I tried crowd surfing and the imbeciles dropped me after 2 seconds... My buddies filmed it too, it drove me nuts. Their videos all looked and sounded like garbage.

Thank god for the punk kids who still know how to have a good time! Put your phones away and have a good time! And if you're gonna film, you better not buy a floor seat!!!

I think the Calgary Public Library DVD/Blu-Ray selections is kind of comparable to the video store experience. I have found some pretty interesting movies just flipping through them on the rack.

In some ways I lament the lack of selection for TV channels. 30-ish years ago, it was just the 3 major networks, and a couple of local channels that would show the news and weather and simulcast whatever was on one of the big network channels. It made channel surfing so much easier and basically everybody you knew had watched the same stuff the night before.
