I'd definitely throw in the new James Bond movies too.

I mean, Ivan Reitman is producing, but considering every movie he has directed in the last 15 years has been awful, it's probably better he's taken the back seat.

The review in the G&M was 60 per cent ranting about how the people complaining about the movie are adolescent misogynists who don't have a life. I came away from it with the impression that the reviewer felt he had a moral duty to support the movie. It would have had a lot more credibility as a review if it just dealt with the movie and left the political screed to one of the half-dozen columnists at the G&M who are paid to write that kind of stuff.

A Ghostbusters remake better than the original?

Yeah, I can see that.

It's not just an old timers thing, I hate all these 80's movies remakes and I'm 25. It's just that going to the movies is expensive and I need to be sold on the trailer, and a crappy looking remake of a great movie isn't gonna make me want to part with my money.

Going back to that G&M article, it's also a shame this guy seems to hold up Paul Feig comedies as the apex of female driven comedies when there's so many actually funny shows (Girls on HBO being a big example, and Broad City on Comedy Central) that are much more worthy of recognition.

And you young folk need to start coming up with original characters and stories instead of resurrecting stuff made 30 years ago.

Why can't we have more female roles like Ripley (my favourite), Sarah Connor, Furiosa, Elizabeth Swann, Clarice Starling, Princess Leia, The Bride, Marion Ravenwood etc. you don't think specifically about their gender you simply remember them as great characters.

Remakes aren't exclusive to this era or anything.

What were the popular remakes in 1984?

I saw Ghostbusters tonight (won screening tickets) and didn't think it was that great. The humour felt a bit forced and over the top. Enjoyed some cameo scenes, and had a few good laughs. Overall I wouldn't recommend paying to see it, and maybe wait till its on Netflix or rent it.

Coincidentally enough, the original 1984 from 1956 was remade in... Wait for it... 1984.

In 86 The Fly and Little Shop of Horrors were pretty popular remakes.

In 83 Scarface was a pretty popular remake.

80s in general, 3 men and a baby, dirty rotten scoundrels, the blob, the thing, all remakes.

Star Wars, Fistful of Dollars, and Magnificient Seven were all either "re-imaginings" or direct remakes I believe. Not the 80's, but they've been remaking movies forever and ever.

Most are excellent remakes because they stayed true to the originals.

Even in the golden age of cinema remakes were abundant. Tarzan (remade in 1984 and again this year), A Christmas Carol, and The Great Gatsby were remade several times in the 20s through the 40s.

It's not a new phenomenon. I get that people feel their childhoods are being tainted by awful versions of their favourite franchises, but I stopped caring awhile ago.

Oceans is a remake from the 60's ratpack. And 12 was a steaming pile of you know what.
