Maybe it is just me but I dont see Ferland being an effective NHL player. I do not see him amounting to anything much. I hope I am dead wrong in that opinion.

Considering you (like others with this view point) are basing it off his 24-year old rookie season, I'd say it's extremely premature.

Most likely. I do see him being a good 4th line player, a passable 3rd line player and that is about it. Would not be comfortable slotting him in on the 2nd line. Hopefully he will develop into something more. Definitely too early to say.

It's possible, and I would love for Shinkaruk to take that spot and move Ferland down the lineup, but he is decent enough. Also, the more I think about it, the more I believe Tkachuk makes the team right away.

The Bennett line could easily become the 2nd line if both kids progress as expected.
I came to the same conclusion as the Flamesnation article from a cap angle rather than a Brouwer impact angle that the Flames were tired of rebuilding and are going for a playoff run now.
It seems like figured after the playoff series win that the pieces were in place.... adding Hamilton and Frolik and getting Gio back should have pushed the flames up the ladder last year.. Now Brouwer is an add in for the playoff push and run.

I agree, I feel Shinkaruk has more potential and Ferland would be better suited and more effective on a 4th line energy role and standing in front of the goalie on the PP.
These stat only arguments are getting real old. No replacement for watching Brouwer and making up your own mind on how he plays. It's called scouting, it's the primary tool NHL teams use to evaluate players. Stat arguments pale in comparison to the value of actually watching players.
HERO charts are a cheap and weak replacement for scouting. Watching players is still by far the best and most important way to evaluate them.
Of course watching players is the best, most important way to evaluate them.
But the fancy stats tell us pretty much everyone on the Flames who 'we' think is good, from watching them, is good. And those stats show players less good as less good. Not 100%, but almost.
So here's hoping the fancy stats that show Brouwer as pretty meh are one of the instances where they are wrong about the player.
