Funny, you can say that about any individual player on the Flames last year. And each time it's nonsense.

Nobody is saying Colborne is "so good," and I'd be one of the first to say that a contract in the 4 million range is too much...

...but to suggest not qualifying him with the interest of just letting him go entirely? That is stupid. Colborne is not the sort of player you just let go for nothing and easily replace. That's hideously bad asset management.

What do people expect from a middle six winger? Honestly? Because apparently 40 points and a sound positional game isn't it. So what is it?

Seems like we should have heard who the Flames were qualifying by now... no?

Historically Flames have put out a press release just before the 3pm deadline.

Personally, I feel not being cringeworthy for the first 50% of the season is a starting point...

Colborne is a "middle 6" guy with the awareness and hockey IQ of a beer leaguer. Fire him into the sun.

sounds like the flames might make a move

Dean Molberg @fan960boomer
With qualifying offers coming due, don't be surprised if the #Flames make a move today.

Likely nothing of the blockbuster variety but maybe a chance to add a piece in an area of need.

Point is, even if you don't like him just letting him walk as an RFA is madness.

The amount of people who want to give up assets for guys like Chiasson and Hayes.... yet let Colborne walk.

Makes zero sense.

Picking up Chiasson out of Ottawa? If they don't want to qualify, could come super cheap (virtually free)

What's the risk in not qualifying Ortio? He leaves & finds another back-up spot?
Unlikely.

Don't qualify him & keep pursuing that better back-up option. If it doesn't come to fruit, then grab Ortio.

Signing him to a 3.5+ million deal is madness.

Just because you don't qualify him doesn't mean he walks. It just means he's a UFA. He likes the team and he wants to come back, the only difference is now you're buying him on the open market rather than having his cost dictated to you by an arbitrator based on a blurred account of events.

I've agreed to and pointed out specifically as much.

Its a one year deal. Its not ideal. But its a short term thing and if he struggles, you move on next year. (I highly doubt he gets $3.5 million anyways - Mike Hoffman was in a similar age range last year and had 27 goals and got $2M)

I'd rather that than sign some free agent for 3 years at a similar rate (see Raymond, Mason).

Yeah come on, you qualify Colborne. Why is it even a discussion. If he was a UFA, maybe it'd be worth talking about, but as an RFA he definitely has value, even if you want him gone there's teams that would gladly take him. But why would you want him gone? Ever since they stopped putting him at centre I've had no issues with him.

Don't get people cutting Jooris and keeping guys like F.Hamilton and Arnold. They are all similar ages and one has proven he can play in the NHL while the others look like AHL/European guys at best. Heck Jooris can even take faceoffs if that is the concern.

The way I see it, players who can't crack NHL squads don't get qualified, Not players who annoy some fans because they aren't powerhouses.

I think the problem is that some people can't help but see Colborne as a slower, larger, quicker, smaller Colborne.
