Maybe it's just me, but Bouma is one guy I can't wait to ship out. I can't think of any player I've soured on more than him, Wideman included. I'd gladly take a 3rd for him.
But there's a difference between what he's worth to us, vs. what his market value is.
We wouldn't move him for a 3rd or 4th because he's a known value in the Flames org. and we've invested years in his development. He's only worth that to other teams because they have no time invested in him, and they have to evaluate him on his numbers alone, which were poor last season.

I'd love to do a lighthearted sig-bet. I believe he'll have a resurgence if he's still here this season and don't think he's broken down.
Hartley tried to enforce sliding to block shots and going 100% no matter what. Eventually a team will get sick of that and a player like Bouma gets exploited the most in a system of hustle over smarts.

My proposal: Calgary trades #6, #54, C/RW Joe Colborne and LW Michael Ferland to Columbus for #3 & LW Scott Hartnell
Columbus gets a 2nd, a big young-ish centre & a younger & cheaper replacement for Hartnell to drop down 3 spots.
Calgary gets Puljujarvi, who fills a huge organisational need, and Hartnell who replaces Ferland with more offence & plenty of leadership qualities, albeit at an inflated cap hit & with a high likelihood of diminishing returns.
I like that deal for Calgary, but is it enough? Some might say it's an overpayment, but I doubt Columbus bites for anything less than that.
Laine will end up being better than Monahan is my prediction. But it'll be close, and I'd rather take the proven one now than take that risk.
As to the other person saying they wouldn't trade Bennett for 3rd overall. I haven't been a big Bennett fan yet and think he's overrated here. Puljujarvi or Laine, both of these guys will be better than Bennett I think.
Bennett will end up being a quality second liner.

Yes, he didn't have a great year. But I fully expect him to be much better this year - Canadian fans are incredibly impatient and just want to get rid of players the moment they have an off year. Guess what? Players' performance ebbs and flows.
The change in value from 6 to 4 is marginal. Giving up a 2nd and an NHL player is ridiculous (which is why you don't - and won't - see it)
Hey I love Bouma as much as anyone...but he isnt some sort of deal breaker to move up 2 spots at the top quarter of the draft.
There is no way he and a 2nd entice Columbus to switch spots with Calgary even if Hartnell's contract comes with it. Hartnell alone is good enough to garner a bigger return( from any team) thats better than a 2nd and a 4th line player.

If you want to move up in this draft, which I like the idea of, you're going to have to overpay. The 3 top prospects are all extremely high quality players.
Bouma is a strong defensive player that will have a small shelf life due to his play style.
He is considered Injury prone and is over paid to play a 4th line role which I believe is the correct role for him in the NHL.
He never really had top 6 potential and I think its safe to assume that for the most part he is at his peak. Could he be a random 20g guy in any of the next 5 years? Maybe.. but its more likely that 30-60 games a year putting up 20 or less points.
If you can get a 3rd or 4th for him I think you do it and make room for Hathaway, Grant and Jankowski.
That being said I still wouldnt trade to moveup. We got Kylington in the 2nd last year. Who is to say we wont be able to use those assets on something more realistic to get whoever falls this year.
If Chychun fell to the 2nd round and we traded all our 2nds to moveup 2 spots it would be ####ty

I don't et why anyone would trade a 21 year old who has scored 80 goals in his first 3 years in the league for a prospect. Monahan is proven and the rea deal. Laine he probably is but he hasn't proved it yet and is a winger where Monahan is a centre. Flames don't do the trade but the Jets likely don't either as Schiefele is a very similar player to Moanhan.
Bennett was the top ranked player by central scouting. He has been described as a player with skill and grit. Last year we saw flashes of skill that could lead us all to hope he turns out to be the best player on our team when he hits his prime. His grit was very noticeable. He hit everyone and pissed off the opposition on a frequent basis. Again I don't see how a Euro winger is going to have more value than a 20 year old who has proven he can play in the league.
The only time a team is going to trade and established 21 and younger centre for a prospect is if there is issues with the young NHLer or the team trading the young NHLer has an abundance of that particular position. Flames have 3 good centre's now but until Jankowski proves he is legit and Backlund repeats last year it would be crazy foolish to move Bennett

Nah. I hope Bouma does well for this team so I'm not about to "gloat" in a signature if he does poorly. Besides my signature has long since been spoken for.

I think the price is going to be too steep. And the Flames are by no means out of the running for Tkachuk or Dubois. But even if they're taken by EDM and VAN, I'd be happy with Juolevi or Nylander, the former may go to VAN/EDM leaving one of Tkachuk/Dubois to us.

Bennett may be only a quality 2nd liner I agree. That is his floor. His ceiling is franchise C and is higher than Monahan's. I personally wouldn't trade him for Laine for this reason.

Really? I hope you're right but based on what I've seen so far I think I'm taking Monahan over Bennett. I don't know exactly why but Bennett hasn't impressed me. I hope he breaks out this year though. What makes you say his ceiling is higher, just because he was drafted earlier?
I just think Laine is going to be amazing. Winnipeg got so lucky moving up to that pick. It'd be a mistake to trade it.
