Yes, he didn't have a great year. But I fully expect him to be much better this year - Canadian fans are incredibly impatient and just want to get rid of players the moment they have an off year. Guess what? Players' performance ebbs and flows.
The change in value from 6 to 4 is marginal. Giving up a 2nd and an NHL player is ridiculous (which is why you don't - and won't - see it)
|
Have to agree to disagree here. Bouma is a NHL player that blocks shots and plays with heart. He is overpaid by at least $750k which isn't crippling but where does he fit on the roster? I can see him with Backlund and Frolik but like Colborne or Ferland in that spot more.
Also Tkachuk>>>>Nylander in my books. Way rather add a 200+lb forward with skill and bite than a small skilled winger even if he is a right shot

Get this through your collective heads. Nylander is NOT small!!
Doesn't play nearly as small as the Nylander detractors want you to believe. He's the same darned height as Tkachuk. And maybe 15 pounds lighter if the combine results were right.

I wonder if that's because of his black hole possession metrics or his 7 points last season on a 2+M contract?

I understand that's he not tiny, but out of everyone projected to go top 10, Nylander is the second smallest. When you're shorter and lighter than 90% of your peers, you might be relatively small. Too small for a team that has explicit said it wants to get bigger.
Tkachuk is not huge either, as he's still on the smaller half of the prospects projected to go top 10.
Also, none of these guys really play small. Not even Keller (to an extent).

Are you related to him or what?
It's one thing to beat the drum of a prospect you like, but you're be coming obsessive and annoying about it.

Really? I'm annoying? Really not beating the drum other than speaking the truth. I have no preconceived notion of obsession other than stopping the stupidity of speaking falsehoods to form fit a personal bias. You know if player X was actually small then yeah sure say he is small. But saying a player is small when reality is a different story, then it's a problem of putting out misinformation due to a lack of either properly educating yourself or sheer ignorance.
I'm done arguing about the draft preferences. In fact I've stopped, what I am saying here is not wrong. I just want to see proper information used instead of falsehoods.

Little bit tense in here boys, relax. This happens every year. The wait for the draft, camp and the season are tough. No need to be at each others throats over prospects we haven't even drafted. Save this angst for when our goalie with vertigo is putting up .88. That's worth getting pissed about.

Man that Nylander sure is slim and slender. In the LGBT communitty he is what would be referred to as a "twink".
I'm on the Tkachuk bandwagon. Now that guy is a real bear!

Only thing I'll say here is 6'1 is not small for any NHL'er it's league average if I am not mistaken, so even if a team wants to get Bigger, you're not losing anything taking a 6'1" player in the draft. Other than that, I feel like we're in agreement here.

I really doubt Bouma will be the make or break asset that someone is looking for to drop down in the draft.
I think there is some over-rating of Flame players happening here.
Bouma, if anything, has negative value as his contract kinda stinks.
Love the guy but overpaid and injury proned.

Bouma has been under utilized. He's got good hands, he's tough and he's fast. That's a rare combo. Hartley used Bouma like a plug where he should have been used as an accessory. Often times the threat of being hit is just as valuable as making an actual hit and Hartley didn't use that one bit, Hartley used the Brent Sutter approach with many players. Force them into a singular playstyle.
Bouma's not a plug just watch him practicing passes. His hands are soft as butter he's not a plug at all and I predict a major reclamation with Gulutzan. He's got softer hands than Colborne. I can't believe so many are ready to write off a player with such a well rounded skillset. Hartley used Bouma like he was Zac Rinaldo when he's way way more skilled. Some players need more jump (e.g. Baertschi) some players need to be reigned in (e.g. Ovechkin). Bouma needs to just slow it down a little. If he does he'll be incredibly valuable to the team.

He had 2 goals and 7 points in 44 games last year.
He is something in between that guy and the guy that had 16 goals the year before.

Off topic, but this is one of the things I'm most optimistic about with Gulutzan. From his press conference, and other things I've heard since his hiring, he isn't one to try to force players to all play the same way (force square pegs into round holes) but is more interested in creating a system that can utilize each and every player to their individual strengths while they work as a five man unit.
I hope it works out that way.

Me too, especially considering how the Flames are constructed. The majority of teams in the league are built much differently with bigger defense and more experienced/slower forwards. We have an incredibly talented team but also a very unique team. With Brodie, Giordano, Johnny, Sam and Dougie we have one of the most highly talented cores in the league.
At the same time only one of them is big and capable of strong physical boardplay against the rest of the leagues elite. The Sharks, LA, Washington, Florida, Tampa, Pittsburgh have more size and less dynamic ability.
Considering that Calgary needs to adopt a different strategy than the rest of the league if they want to succeed. With how Brodie can skate and how well Johnny can stick handle we should be using a different kind of attack because no other team really has such a dynamic pairing. What other team has two players on the same line that can skate and move the puck like they can? None that I can think of. Gulutzan hopefully creates strategies that exploit our unique strengths. Maybe Brodie holds the puck and circles back or Johnny caries the puck towards Dougie in situations where other teams would never do the same thing.

Steinberg did mention the Flames were shopping Bouma at the deadline. He was part of the Super Bowl hangover crew. I think they dump that contract if they can. 4th rounder? Maybe
