It's the only sensible solution, that's why I was actually worried. We're talking about the NHL here.

Moot point now as far as protection goes, given the update, but the place I'd have in mind for Gio this summer I think he'd waive for.

Someone's going to bite on Clarkson if they waive that 3rd pick.

Given the likelihood of another future expansion draft (I can't believe they'll keep the number of teams an odd number) I bet we see a lot less NMC's handed out in future free agency. Maybe none.

Haha, what an oddly cryptic post. Honestly what were you hinting at and why so secret if it's just a thought you had?

Either that or the value of them will skyrocket. That's the only way to secure the city you stay in. NTCs will become worthless.

Pittsburg really needs to consider dumping Fleury if possible, or they will have to expose Murray, won't they?

According to that list Toronto would have to protect Horton even though he will be on LTIR and will never play again? That would suck

They got rid of Clarkson's contract by taking on a player who was on the LTIR and would never play again though. It's hard to feel too bad for them. The way they got around the cap by pure cash, their 7th forward 'protection' spot is probably the least they deserved to lose.
And really, the difference between the 7th and 8th actual forward for Toronto is probably minimal. Losing a defender spot would suck for a lot of teams, but not many teams have 7 solid forwards to protect.

New York Rangers
Marc Staal
Dan Girardi
Henrik Lundqvist
If the Rangers are forced to protect Staal and Girardi that could be a big hit. They were arguably the fourth and fifth defenders on the team already. Neither have great contracts at 5.7M and 5.5M long term.
Of course they protect McDonagh, but now Klein, potentially Yandle (or whoever they get in UFA) and young players like Skjei would be exposed.
EDIT: Actually Girardi has a modified NTC for 2017-2019. He likely doesn't need to be protected. Same with Horton. And of course Sureloss already mentioned that

I've never once suggested it wasn't possible, just that it would be stupid to make that assumption unless it was announced otherwise and that honoring a contract is not illogical, but please continue with your petty posts.
