Even if you could buyout Wideman before the expansion draft next year, why would the team need to send him back to us to buyout?

Only paid during the regular season.

^ Just for reference Wyshynwski also tweeted out that Daly also said that a player whose NMC expires or changes to a NTC in 2017 but the contract still has years on it also did not need to be protected.
so for example Dan Giradi's NMC changes to a NTC in 2017 and would not need to be protected. Same with Horton, Rask.
