So a top 5 pick again?

Offensively we've actually been above water with this team. A large chunk of our offense comes from the top 3 on defence you have to remember, which is stronger than most in the league. But still, on paper it's hard not to say that landing a big fish in FA wouldn't be pretty huge for the team.
Could really use an Okposo/Eriksson/Boedker to add a proven contributor to the top 6, and in turn more support for Bennett to help get him producing more consistently.

I was really high on Boedker for a while, but then I read up on him and from everything I can gather he's a complete perimeter player, no nose-for-the-net, no grind, extremely soft. I highly doubt he's the kind of guy Treleving would be interested in.
Okposo on the other hand is pretty grindy and can score, but Isles fans are all over him about his complete inability to play defense, and they're also pretty confident he'll get north of 6 million per season and I think that's too rich for our blood.

Johnny in the 4th round seems like a pretty nice gift from the hockey gods.
I don't think the hockey gods have ignored the Flames fans what so ever.
One could argue the Hamilton scenario was a nice gift too. Ie: him being available and not going to Edmonton but going to YYC instead!
As for Pribyl, hope this guy pans out.
But agree we need a Bonafide top 6 guy to play with Bennett.

They may have been top 10 but that's also driven by huge point totals from the blueline in a bit of a helter-skelter system under Hartley.
5 on 5, aside from top line, there's not a lot of point consistency in that group until Bennett reaches the next step in his development. I would be a lot more comfortable shifting Bouma/Ferland down to the 4th line and adding a top 6 and top 9 winger into the fold to feel good about this group.

I'm not sold on Okposo.
It's always interesting when you get to see a playoff series when your team is out. You pick a favourite or two and it allows you to do a bit of a deep dive on a club you wouldn't otherwise know.
And to me he looked like a guy living off Tavares, turned the puck over too often. Very much a ride along and a not a play driver.

If you believe Backlund and Colborne can improve from their career highs, while Johnny can sustain PPG play, then sure, the Flames could remain a top offensive team despite the loss of Hudler and Jones. But I can't see how Bennett is going to produce when centring some low quality wingers

The notion of players "living" off of other line mates is interesting. One can say the player is adaptable.
There are only few players that drive the play and a line. Most players are complimentary players. One could even argue Monahan's total is driven by Gaudreau.
It's not a bad thing. If Okposo can live off of Gaudreau line or Bennett line then why not?

Unlikely that Pribyl cracks the NHL lineup before 2017. New league, new country and surgery this summer? I think it will be more like the Nakladal situation, which is likely best for both player and team (assuming Nak re-signs!)

Nothing wrong with players like that... unless you pay them 6M+ on a long term. Players making 6M+ have to be the players driving things.

I think Nakladal could have been brought up earlier and as well if it wasn't such a log jam for the first half of the year.
Would be happy if he follows the same path.

Player hopes to make NHL team. More at 11.
(I know, the story had way more to it, the headline is just funny.)

I can't help but be reminded of how PA Parenteau and Matt Moulson both had career years playing alongside Tavares.

So Monahan shouldn't get the longterm 6M+ contract?
If the guy puts up points, he has to be paid. Doesn't matter how he got them.
Okposo for example has put up 0.84 ppg the last 3 years combined. 3 years ago, Tavares did get hurt and Okposo didn't slow down. It's easy to say players get their points off of great players like Tavares because they're all over the place but guys like Okposo have a role and with that role come points and big contracts.

Sure. But that doesn't mean WE should pay it. Which is the whole point.
(and Monahan is a terrible example as he brings lots more to the table than just points)
