A decent longish read that is relevant to the conversation. I quite liked it.

It's like the young supporters of Eugene McCarthy who had a tantrum when the 'establishment' Hubert Humphrey won the Democratic nomination in 1968. The result? Richard Nixon in the White House.

These books you speak of... they are available electronically, yes?

Aw crap I pulled a Dion, my bad. I'm expected to read back three posts before mine instead of instantly responding to things? What is this, Soviet Russia?

You could just watch John Oliver if you are opposed to reading. He covered it quickly and with a modicum of humour.

Fascinating read, thanks for the link.

I just turned on CNN after the hockey game wrapped up and it looks like things might be getting really out of control outside of Trump's rally in New Mexico. They are saying that protesters are taking down barriers, throwing rocks, starting fires and fighting.

It is interesting that poor white people and poor black people are on completely opposite ends of the political spectrum. Maybe that's by design because the one thing that could upset the apple cart for the wealthy elite (and corporate America) would be if all the poor people got behind one political party.

Ah, good old CNN. If you go to a protest prepared to help people who have been pepper sprayed, you are against democracy.

I recommend Nixonland for a dramatic look at how the modern U.S. political table was set, and the cultural currents underlying it all. Basically, the white working class has a deep-rooted resentment of American cultural and political elites. When the Democratic party seemed to fall under the sway of those elites, and furthermore pandered to American blacks for votes (describing how they see it), they turned to the Republicans. But not the classic Rockefeller business-guy in a suit Republican - the Republican who could believably share their resentment of elites. Religion and anti-socialism play a part (we find it odd that poor white Americans can be against socialism, but they are). But it's really all about resentment.

And of course the follow up to Nixon-Land (and the roadmap to how we got where we are today): The Invisible Bridge: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...visible-bridge
