Wasn't there the joke out that season that after they fired Carlyle and the Leafs got even worse, that Carlyle should have received Jack Adams votes? Because it showed just how poor that team was. I believe the Leafs were actually in playoff contention when they fired him and then after the change, they really dived.
Right so the record with and without Carlyle that year was:
Randy Carlyle (21-16-3-0)
Peter Horachek (9-28-0-5)
I do recall that Leaf team being badly outshot that year that he was fired but if you look at his "body or work" with the Leafs, he actually had a winning record.

He did, got ONE vote....haha
The joke was that he was the only leaf coach/player to receive any vote for any award.

I'm not that hard on Francis.
He butters his bread having opinions and stepping out there with what he thinks or what he hears, which is a lot more entertaining then just reporting what Trelining said and calling it a day.
I wonder what he's heard on Boudreau not in the their plans, interesting.
I tend to agree however as if they were hot after Boudreau why let Treliving go to Russia the day of the Hartley firing. Not to mention the fact that Boudreau seems to have a megaphone attached to his hip as every detail of his going seemed to be on twitter on a daily basis and there was never a mention of the Flames.

Fair enough, but I think that footnote you want to put next to his cup goes against 90% of all other winning cup coaches too. And there are far many more examples of coaches who failed to take stacked teams to the promise land, than there are ones who actually succeed like Carlyle did. Not really sure you can use his success as a negative.
|
I generally agree with your point - a coach who wins the cup can't be horrible. But then again, who was a better coach, Bob Johnston or Terry Crisp?
I would like a Quenneville or Sutter or Babcock who've won. I'd be very happy with a Trotz who hasn't. And, I don't want a Carlyle or Torts who have won.

On Fan960 at noon Lou and Pat were speculating on names like Travis Green or Ryan Huska. Line of thought seemed to be that the young core group here might respond best to a younger up and coming AHL type coach, similar to what Tampa did with Cooper. Even a Kevin Dineen would basically fit this mould. Will be interesting to see if Treliving opts for this route.

You are on to something. I believe Hartley's usage of those two players is a big factor in why he got canned. In Hamilton's case though, the player did not help himself at the start of the year when he was on the top pairing.
This team with a new system and a new goalie could be very different from what we saw last year. I believe that is what management is counting on, as other changes will be difficult.

Did the Flames even receive permission to interview Boudreau?

IMO I don't think they even asked. I have no problem if the flames are going after some new blood coach. My only problem would be if they hired an old re-tread coach without condsidering / interviewing probably the best re-tread coach available in Boudreau.

The Pittsburgh Penguins play a suffocating three-man forecheck with their speed.
Do we have the players to a possession game? IMO Yes. But I'm not sure which coach's philosophy best suits our players. That's what Treliving has to find - the right fit. Possession is not just 6'4 giants playing Kris-Russell-in-the-middle.
|
And to add another wrinkle, I have the impression Treliving was just as concerned on defensive possession as offensive. Defensive possession may may sound like an oxymoron (and perhaps someone will provide a better term), but I don't think he liked the passive defensive setup at all. I think he wants a coach that will be more aggressive in the defensive zone to quicken turnovers and restore possession.

Francis on 960:
claims Flames didn't even attempt to talk to Boudreau, he just wasn't looking they were looking for.
2 sources says they didn't have any interest
Many people have thrown their hat in.
Some preliminary interviews thus far.
Expected to be a long drawn out process.

Mike Van Ryn (whom many consider a future NHL coach) has just stepped down as coach from the Kitchener Rangers. An unexpected development, apparently.

Just going off what I heard on here I thought, but isn't this the opposite of what he (Francis) was saying before? Or am I missing something?

Never trust anything Francis says unless he has a source. This latest info that we didn't want Boudreau he apparently sourced from two different people.

You're not missing anything, he speculated that the Flames wanted Boudreau. Ended up being dead wrong so he found some new angles

Just look at all those prior Burke connections in the organization.
Joe Colborne...I think that's it?
