CP just scared the hell out of me, I read Marc Crawford's name and assumed Flames hired him as HC

I have a question, and I'll fully admit based on my knowledge, Carlyle is not the guy I hope we hire. But, why am I and so many so against hiring one of only 7 coaches who have managed to win a Stanley Cup post 05 lock out?

1.) He had a really strong group in the Anaheim team who won the cup. A young Perry-Getzlaf, prime Selanne and JSG, prime Pronger-Neidermayer. Just like how Hartley had prime Sakic, Roy, Forsberg, Tanguay. So cup accolades are nice, but there's a footnote next to each that they had hall-of-famers playing for them.
2.) His possession based metrics and defensive play was very suspect in Toronto and part of why he was let go, which are two key areas Treliving mentioned that needed improving.
3.) Him being more of a hard-nosed coach isn't going to be received well especially after Hartley's fresh departure and rumors that he was being tuned out in the locker room.

Ren has been completely unprofessional about this. Probably upset that he lost his one source in the Flames organization.

As someone already posted last week the French Canadian community really protect their own. I don't think a lot of teams were looking at the way the Flames played this season thinking; "we gotta get a coach like that".

I wouldn't have a hissy fit as really it would be fairly similar to Hartley's Flames who were at least entertaining. It's possible people's opinions are being clouded by the Toronto stink but that Leafs team under him played pretty terrible hockey for the most part and IMO this is a young team that needs more of a teacher coach that is going to install a sound defensive game. I'm just not sure if Carlyle checks that box.

I guess Boudreau should have focused on coaching the game instead of performing for the camera.
(I don't think it has really anything to do with his coaching ability though. It was a pretty unique situation.)

Makes sense, some thoughts:
On #1 - Sure. You are basically saying Anahiem was a good team, very true. I can't think of the last team that won a Stanley cup that wasn't.........I guess Carolina? Fair enough, but I think that footnote you want to put next to his cup goes against 90% of all other winning cup coaches too. And there are far many more examples of coaches who failed to take stacked teams to the promise land, than there are ones who actually succeed like Carlyle did. Not really sure you can use his success as a negative.
On #2 - Almost the reverse of number one. You aren't prepared to give him credit for his success, but are more than willing to give him all the credit for his failures. He coached a really crappy team in Toronto.
How were his possession stats in Anahiem then or his defensive stats? I honestly don't know, they might have not also been good, and I agree if he's not a possession coach and that's what Treliving wants, it would be an unusual hire. But I'd also be cautious of suggesting his Toronto "stats" indicate what he's actually like, cause that was a bad team........especially if you aren't willing to give him credit for his successes when he had a good team.
On #3 - I'm not sure we need to go to a "softer" coach even if Hartley was tuned out. Seems to me like many of the better coaches seem to have this "hard nose" reputation. I think just because Hartley (may have been) tuned out, doesn't mean the next guy will be too even if he is hard nosed. It's still a change of voice and perspective.

Yeah, I happened to be driving and heard it - it was ridiculous. And then he assures everyone that with Guy Boucher (another QC guy presumably), Ottawa is certain to make the playoffs next season. Give me a break - maybe we should try to scoop Michel Terrien - we would be certain to win the Cup.

And his whining is even more ridiculous considering that Boudreau who ended up getting the job was fired a whole 4 days before Hartley was.

A question I have is do we have the players to play the possession game? If we don't than Carlyle makes some sense, especially if he can adjust as the team gets bigger and stronger. Also if we don't have the players for the possession game, the major reason we fired Hartley is because his shelf life had run out, not so much his game plan.

I think if we don't have them now that we're moving towards having them. I think the Flames are looking to add some size/strength on the wings either through draft, trade or free agency. We need some players who dominate on the cycle to retain possession in the offensive end. What I do think we have is defensemen who can be excellent at jumping in and keeping the puck in at the point. And we've got skilled centres who play well at both ends. The only real thing we're lacking IMO is a couple wingers who play a powerful game along the boards who can play on the top two lines. Colborne and Ferland are our only options so far in that regard and neither is really a proven top two line player. Colborne has learned how to stand in front of the net and screen the goalie but he still doesn't dominate the boards as much as you'd like from a player of his height.

Agreed ...
we used to have three Brodie, Giordano and Backlund
last summer he added Hamilton and Frolik to make it 5, and then Bennett in relative terms seems to be a possession player to keep an eye on as well.
Another wrinkle in this is deployment, I think Treliving mentioned usage (maybe it was Burke) which to me is one of
a) Hamilton in the third pairing until Xmas
b) Frolik with almost zero powerplay time
I think Colborne and Ferland were taking positive steps late to this type of player as well.
Will certainly be interesting to see this crew with a new jockey.

To be fair the Ducks promptly fired Boudreau right after their first round playoff exit while the Flames waited weeks. I personally don't think the Flames did anything wrong but from Treliving's presser it sure sounded like he had made his mind up a while ago about Hartley and maybe the firing should have come a little sooner but I really don't think Hartley would have been a major player in Ottawa or Minnesota anyway. I actually don't see him getting another NHL job outside of maybe Montreal.

Quite the farcry from the guarantees Francis himself gave us that Boudreau was coming to Calgary last week. Nice reporting you doofus!

LOL. A week after Francis thought Boudreau was definitely going to be the Flames coach. Just Francis things.

Sounds like he's correct but the source is the same guy that said the Flames would win the draft lottery and that Boudreau was the number one candidate and would be the next Flames head coach. At this point anything he says I'm willing to bet is 180 degrees from the truth.

The possession game is not one kind of game.
The LA Kings play a hard dump, chase and extremely controlled entry possession game.
The Anaheim Ducks play more of a methodical cycle game.
The Tampa Bay Lightning play a quick-hitting possession game of shooting first and winning the race to the rebounds.
The Pittsburgh Penguins play a suffocating three-man forecheck with their speed.
Do we have the players to a possession game? IMO Yes. But I'm not sure which coach's philosophy best suits our players. That's what Treliving has to find - the right fit. Possession is not just 6'4 giants playing Kris-Russell-in-the-middle.

Also said Hartley would be the next coach of the Sens so he's on a hot streak right now
