I'm not sure what the donation thing is I am seeing, I will catch up on this thread, but there are a lot of people up there who will need help and a huge and sincere thank-you to each and every one of you who is donating. I will sort out what is up with it and be donating as well.
I know it's "trendy" to think it's all fat-cats making "oil money" in Fort McMurray but that is not the case. A lot of people will need a lot of help.
I have so many mixed emotions right now that I need time to sort them all out, but after seeing the things I have over the last few days, I am very proud to be a citizen of Fort McMurray, of Alberta, of Canada, but also very proud to be a (small) part of this group at Calgarypuck. You folk do a lot of great things when things are really needed. Some may never find out who you are....but I know who you are!
Sincerely, thank-you.

I guess I just worry that while this tally might encourage some people to donate it probably makes some in our community feel pretty bad about their situation. I hope that isn't the case!

Absolutely agree. I hesitated over posting my donation for exactly these reasons. As others have said, I'd be remiss if someone felt shame because they couldn't give as me.
For my part, I initially had planned to donate less, but seeing the generousity of other people on CP made me see that I was in a position to do more. The roll call of donations inspired me and stretched me a little. That's why I'm continually impressed by this motley group of fans and remain grateful that this community exists.

Sorry, now I keep posting when I said I'm going to take the night off from this whole thing, but in Edmonton I stopped at Shopper's Drug Mart to pick up a few necessities. They asked me if I was from Fort Mac and gave me 50% off a few necessites (deodorant, razor, etc). The hotel I am staying gave me the room for $75 a night for the next couple of nights - not sure what the regular price is but the girl at the desk said it was a discount for Fort McMurray residents. When I bought beer here, three people were in the store talking about the fires - two employees and a customer - I chimed in and said I had just come from there and clarified a couple of details for them. The customer bought my dozen beer and said: "You need a beer man"! Lol. People are really being awesome. I know, even in Edmonton!

Through Shoppers I've been collecting donations all day. Lots of people really care. I know there are crude Facebook posts and such being circulated, but of the hundreds of people I've talked to in the last couple days, there's been unanimous heartbreak and caring. Alberta is loved at least here, and I'm sure elsewhere.

There were also lots of places to get free fuel, gas and diesel, all along the highway. I didn't feel comfortable taking it for free and stuck to the paid stations. I'm by no means rich, but I'm not destitute either. When the highway opens up releasing those 25000+ people from North of the city, I'm sure there will be many who legitimately need it. There were also MANY places to stop and get free water and food, dog and cat food, cat litter, etc.
I'm sorry, I should really catch up with the thread before I babble on any more as perhaps a lot of this has already been covered. Just feeling a little release of emotions right now!

I think you've earned the right to babble.
Your updates are great, please keep them coming. It has been great to hear about the endless numbers of people helping in any way they can

Trudeau has stated they will match donations to Red Cross. If you donate $333.33 to Red Cross and Company matches that donation to Red Cross for a total of $666.66, Trudeau would have to put in $666.66 to match Red Cross donations for a total of $1333.32, no?
Either way. Awesome to hear.

The government is matching "Individual" donations. Not company.

Totally agree. Even the $5 donation made me proud to be part of this group of wonderful individuals. It's teamwork, not individual competition.
Also, thanks to millhouse11 for confirming. I must have misread Trudeau's quote.

Beer production in Edmonton was stopped & nearly 70,000 cans of water produced to help out evacuees from #ymmfire.

As the Reddit page said, they finally labeled their beer properly!
Wonderful to see private companies step it up! I may be forced to drink a Labett beer tonight
