Let's not degrade this into a "context" debate. You can pretty much argue any insult is homophobic if applied in the right circumstance.....there does need to be a line but let's not get ridiculous.

Yeah I dunno. I try not to use it mostly because I just kind of assume someone in the vicinity is gay in most public circumstances. Even something as tame as "dink toucher" I avoid using. And I like saying that one.

Personal opinion on that one maybe.

So it's inherently tied up in homophobia. Pretty hard to deny. Why else would it have a negative connotation?

But nonetheless, a sense of perspective is crucial in these things... there is a sort of language policing line that needs to be carefully trodden because we really are getting to a place where someone seems to be so offended by just about anything that they start rending their garments. The best response is "yeah, when you stop and think about it, that's probably something you really should discard from your vocabulary", and move on.

Nobody is asking you to apologize for anything, ding dong. What we're saying is your lived experience likely doesn't mirror those who are offended by the word and therefore you should probably defer to them on the matter of why it's offensive.

I think the double bird to the official was the worst part...how was he not given a 10 for that? He was back on the ice to be a d-bag at the end of the game

Not to belabor the point, but this from a gay sports reporter in Chicago:

@ChristopherHine

Tribune colleague @ChrisKuc has what Shaw said. Shaw was visibly shaken and on the verge of tears as he apologized.

Shaw wanted to talk after his media session & he's sincere in his apology and in saying that's not the kind of guy he is. I appreciated that

He could've ducked the media and didn't have to talk to me afterward. It took a certain amount of guts to do that.

Just because you read it with as dubious, doesn't mean it was

I think that the punishment is suitable. It was obvious he went overboard but there's no need to lunch the guy.But if I was Q I would be scratching him an additional game for submarining their chances to win.

Yeah - and remember that missing a playoff game is much more of a punishment than a regular season game.

I find being called a ding dong to be offensive. Please do not use that word. You do not know of my lived experience and why I feel that way, so just defer to me on the matter of why it's offensive.

By your logic, literally any word could be offensive.. I give up.

I think you're missing the real point of this - this particular incident doesn't really matter for the people involved. Shaw doesn't seem like a terrible person, just someone who grew up playing a game where that word was part of the trash talk. It doesn't mean he's homophobic or hates gay people. And, the refs who the slur was directed at clearly weren't offended by it.

The problem is that, with that word being part of the game, it affects players at a much younger age. I have a friend who refs minor hockey and says that the word gets thrown around all the time, at young ages. Which is not really surprising, given that kids see and hear this type of thing from their idols on the ice.

I know it's hard to imagine what it's like to grow up being gay - I have no idea how big of a struggle it would be. But, try to put yourself in the shoes of a parent of a gay child. I know that if I have a gay son and teammates/opponents use the word and it prevents him from having fun playing the sport, maybe even drives him away, I will be very, very upset. It's not the same as other trash talk, and there's no point pretending that it is. With my hypothetical son, if he gets called a "ding dong", I'll gladly tell him to shake it off, and give it back to whoever said it; maybe I'd teach him a couple of choice words to throw back. But, where the word hits on something very personal about his identity, it would be a lot harder to tell him that it's not a big deal, and that he shouldn't take it personally.

If suspending Shaw for a game takes a step towards a more inclusive game at all levels, I'm all for it.

Religion, family, sexuality should all be left out of trash talk. Really it was just dumb and shortsighted, we've all done something like that. Problem was it was in the playoffs with way too many people watching.

I've no problem with suspending Shaw, for what he said...the NHL has an LGBT focused "Let them play" campaign, and MUST come down on homophobic slurs caught on national TV.

As far as the stereo bird...well, the fine was appropriate, IMO...

Have your guys/gals never sat by a penalty box, or player's bench, sometime, and heard the CONSTANT abuse of officials?...the stereo bird is almost humorously tame in comparison to the crap officials take, ALL GAME LONG, at almost every level of play.

Most swearing isn't heard on national tv for kids to hear. The bird was on live tv for everyone to see. It's inappropriate for a professional (adult) to behave in such a manner.

CalFan...they mike the boards, and you hear a LOT of inappropriate stuff, in every game, from bad calls to fumbled passes to pain reactions to blocked shots...the sound guy has to be quick on the mute switch...

I disagree that swearing isn't hear on national tv...it is...and lip reading isn't that hard, either, when the camera zooms in on a guy that is screaming at the refs, 100 feet away.

Don't know what you can do about it...but, it happens.

No issue with suspending Shaw for what he said.

But if that's the standard, why isn't Alex Burrows out of the league? That waste of a human being goes out of his way to say horrific offensive things on purpose. Just because it's not caught on camera it's acceptable?

Is that the line that's being established here?

It happens, but it's rare. So rare actually, usually people post about it.

I just meant you can't accept players flipping off the ref.

Actually, I think it would be awesome if people started throwing that stuff around during scrums. The vast majority of players are likely different Christian denominations. It'd be like living in Ireland.

"Shut up, ya catholic d-bag!"

"Make me, ya protestant wanker!"

3rd man in: "I'll show you, monotheists!"

Both: "Nobody cares about you, atheist!"
